Justice was their pinnacle, it was the sound of a a band who had just lost a friend and were angry at the whole world, and not just in a spoilt teenage way. Hetfield's guitar work is all time and is pretty much unsurpassed to this day. And the DohDohDohDohty production makes the album that much bleaker. Masterpiece.
Death Magnetic is slightly better than St Anger but Lars had lost the ability to drum (if he ever had it lol), his snare sounds like I dont even know what and yeah...they still suck. As for Slayer influence wtf, I cranking Hell Awaits right now and metallica WISH they could get some inspiration from that.
As for new bassist, Trujillo played on St Anger so he aint new. Plus, Suicidal Tendencies went to poo after he joined, I dont trust the man myself....
My 2 cents, from a metal nerd

Im going to agree with Duncan here. Ive been a Metallica fan since 1986 (yes along time :P) and have to say that St Anger was their worst even and to be honest, Death Magnetic is just above it.
I will still listen to it and play it (I have the songs on Guitar Hero World Tour) but I dont rate it as high as anything prior to St Anger

He didn't actually,Trujillo came aboard too late to appear on St. Anger. The band members did not seem to be in any rush to hire a bass player. Bob Rock, in addition to being the co-producer and co-songwriter on St. Anger, was considered the 4th member of the band.(He played all the bass on st anger) Bob even filled in (quite masterfully) at a few live events with the guys. This quote was taken from here

Anyway It sure does kick the arse of those soft cok pieces of DohDohDohDohe load and reload , and I still think it is better than anything else released since Justice IMO

apparently 'guitar hero: metallica' is coming out, just like what they did with aerosmith, except this will probably be half decent

I agree Death Magnetic is a cool album and a breath of fresh air for any Metallica fan. Like alot of people I havent been a huge fan of the later stuff but I have warmed to this album after the first couple of times I played it through. But I think im a little bais, I have a soft spot for Metallica I rekon if they farted on a guitar I'd by it. Maybe im just a sucker!

Putting it up against Justice is a big call though. For me Justice stands alone on its own. It's simply an awesome album.

Although I do find myself humming "All nightmare long" every now and then.

Myself I tend to steer towards Metalcore and Melodic death metal these days. Bands like All that Remains, As I lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, Soilwork, In flames etc thats my cup of tea.

But still love the old skool every now and then.

BTW good to see we have some metal fans on the boards!

James.
