Reel Maintenance.
Hi All,
Just wondering what we all do? There are lots of do & donts that you hear about, what I'm asking is what we do after every salty fish. I basically tighten the drags and give them a hosing(light) or shower with them. Is this sufficient or recommended? Some of my reels have a draiage vent for washing and some dont but all get low pressure water treatment for the aove mentioned methods. I currently dont use any lubricants, which is better for external protection Lannox or Innox. thanks in advance |

yer mate give em a spray off with water with locked drags, then take spool off reel let dry overnite, then put back on, leave loose, evry 4 or 5 sesions i like to give em a hit of lanox to all moving parts then wipe off any excess. Every 6 months i take em into tackle world to get the profesional service.
hopw this helps mate |

At the shop we always recommend a very light spray down with a shower or a hose on the "mist setting" with your drag tight. You jst want to get the salt off, then oil the extrenal moving parts like line rollers, handles and the bearings either side of the main gear (maybe every few trips for the last one).
A spray with some tackle guard never hurts either. More major stuff should be left to someone who knows what they're doing. It's not essential to open up reels often, I only do it when my reels start feeling a little dry, and thats just replacing the grease on the main gear. I've never stripped a reel completely, but if u decide to make sure you lay out the parts in the order you took them out - makes it easy to work backwards.

When i wash the reel, i like to leave it outside for a few hours or longer, it really helps the reel dry, and gives the reel a better clean.

Some of my reels make a pretty loud noise, it's coming from the line roller as when I wind under pressure however when I wind with no line it's still smooth and there's no noise. What the easier way to fix this.

![]() ...nah, send back to manufacturer service centre...make sure if you send via a dealer/tacklo that they make it 100% clear on the repair order form what the problem is...otherwise service centre may (ie, will ) turn handle, hear/feel no evident problem, and return to you at your expense ...or you might be lucky and have the prob fixed under warranty....

Pretty well what everyone has said above
![]() I also lubricate the line roller and bail arm after rinsing and drying my reels after each session. ![]() Be carefull rinsing cheapie reels and probably better to wipe down with a damp cloth to remove salt residue ![]() I usually service my own reels once year or so by stipping them down cleaning all parts to remove old grease and oil then put them back together regreasing with correct grease for moving parts and drag washers etc. If you have reasonable mechanical aptitude and instructions of break down of parts it's not so difficult and I know that everythings OK because I did it ![]() Mark |

After a fishing trip rods and reels get in the shower with me, shaken off and left to air dry. Then the quick spray and wipe with lanox. Full strip down every season. Seems to keep things in order.

Thanks all with your advice
Yeah currently having the same problem as oscarman. Curiously I run two certate 2000s one only makes noise when its winding line in so the roller bearing is suspect but when I use my finger to spin the roller bearing the noisy one spins more freely and without noise??? I used to service my own (cheap) reels until the time I opened up a aero baitrunner and bits sprung out upon removal of coverplate. and now too scared to open the high end reels. But I assume it should be relatively simple to clean out the roller bearing, is there anything I should know about with certate rollers? Also I have heard too many horror stories re sending reel to service and not coming back the way they were. |

a personal trick, use never seize nickle in all your bearings, the nickle acts as a sacrificial element and the bearing will run for ever! although the MSDS for this stuff is postulating that this sh!t is super toxic so only in bearings!
you can water it down 40/60 with lannox or inox for extra water protection or if your a smooth freak like me with lanox with teflon
