Spectra or Dyneema what is the difference?

Hi guys, like most of you fishermen , years ago we fished with Fireline and we were happy with it. Now i fish with Finns braid and again i am much happier with the line but i the last year there have been a significant increase in market share from different companies in the line department.

Firstly what is the difference between Spectra and Dyneema?

Secondly what is the prefered.

cant remembr where but i had a big spout about this topic not long ago, mainly directed at the misconception the braided, GSP's and PE are differnt when in fact they are all based on the same thing

Spectra fibre is HONEYWELL - US aerospace off shoot
Dyneema fibre is Japanese

BOTH are PE or polyethalene (hence the GSP tag...gelspun polyethalene the process used to manufacturing the raw fibre)

ALL companies that make market or what ever ANY superline gets the raw material from these 2 manufacturers and then spin weave tie melt fuse it together to their own specs.

so for instance Fireline is a fused Dyneema and TD sesor braid is a braided Dyneema, same raw material, different end product

again Spiderwire fused and coated Spectra fibre and FINS is a braided spectra fibre...

hope that covers the basics for you.

personally i have both but seem to prefer Dyneema. i have a lot of FINS around but my majority is jap PE based (Dyneema) from daiwa, berkley, platapus and NITLON.

There is no difference between the two Spectra is a US trademark and Dyneema is a world wide trademark. The raw material is the same, the only difference is what line companies do with the raw material, some braid it loose other braid it tight, some use 6 strands other use 8 strands then braid, some try to make the color last others don't try so hard.

Braid lines are just that multiple lines braided together to form a profile usually round (preferable) others braid it loose which is flat (not desirable).

Fused lines are usually multiple lengths of braid that are fused together (like Firleine) it is not a true braided fishing line.

Braided line is just a generic term as braid lines come in many types such as Dacron, micron, GSP, corded fishing lines and so on.

Well thats it in a nutshell.
