Fly Size & Weights
Gday boys,
Just a quick question on what size most people tie their bream patterns on - and what weight eyes are commonly used. There have been some great looking patterns (bunny's etc) posted, and just wondering what size people seem more confident in using. Size 2 seems to be the recommended size in articles, cataloges etc, but I find they are just too big - are 4's or 6's more the go. Also, the eyes on some of the bunnys etc seem fairly big - obviously to get deep, added action etc - but what size rods are you guys throwing these on? I feel a bit weird & over gunning it waving my 8wt around - and prefer the 6, but struggle to throw larger flies with the 6! Any advice/help greatly appreciated. Cheers Justin |

Justin,
Have tied bream flies on everything from 1/0 hooks down to 10's depending on the situation. Larger bream will not hesitate to attack a large fly pattern, even something as large as a 2/0 palm length deceiver especially at night but as a general rule size 4 is about right for most weighted patterns. Six and severn weights are pretty good alround rod weights to use but an eight would certainly not be out of place for delivering weighted patterns around structure or when the wind gets up. Cheers, Chris. |

Hi Justin
I usually use 4 - 6 but i do have a couple of patterns either side up to 2/0 and down to 10. most of my flies i tie i feel are the right size when ona 4 or 6 i prefer a slightly smaller patterns. But like chris said some days they will scoff down some serious offerings. Also if the bream fail to munch on it there are some decent flatties on the bottom as well. As for rod weight i have a #7 and think it a nice rod for bream, dams and trout (ok maybe a bit heavy). 7 or 8 would be ideal for all purpose rods and having a little more sick doesnt seem to hurt when chucking some serious offerings. Cheers Stuie |
