What is the best colour for soft plastics?

I know you have probably been asked this many times before but what is the best colour for soft plastics. I have heard that red is good on the flats and pumpkin seed is good almost anywhere but what coulours do you guts think are the best?

Hey Daniel,

I'm not claiming to know everything about plastics or anything like that but from my personal experience, and I'm sure most will agree with me on this one, there isn't one "best colour", you need to try out different colours/types in different situations. Sometimes I think it's not so much the colour as it's the type of plastic etc etc. I'd start with the pumkinseeds and more natural colours if you're new to it though for sure..just keep trying out different things and techniques and sooner or later you'll find something that works for you.

hi daniel, i do agree with mitch on that, it is all about the lure type and presentation, not that im claiming to know every thing either im sort of new to all this but a guy onthis site i think his name was samurai or some thing and i remember him saying he caught a barra with no eyes and it was caught on a softie too, it might have been some one else i dont really remember

i agree with both the previous posts but if u r looking for a starting point i would say start with the proven colours such as the pumpkin seed , muscdine and other natural colours and not to be scared to experiment in some sessions i have gone through every single colour in my tackle box before i got a hit . its all trial and error.

like Mitch said go for natural colours as a start and if they don't work then change your presentation or go wild on another colour.
eg: on Sat we threw Bloodworm Squidgies and green/black fleck Mini Tanks, brown/chartuese grubs and bright blue shads. We caught fish on all of them, now I'm confused ie: was it the presentation or was it the lure, I just don't know that it was any one particular lure , poor confused fisho.... more than likely a combination of all of the above.

I know one thing, Mim was wrapped scoring so many fish on soft plastics and it was her single best ever session on softies. I guess she is coming of age with her softies fishing watch out JP

Whether fishing sp or hb my experience to date would be similar...sometimes the fish prefer certain styles or colours on particular days and on other day's they'll take anything! All depends where and how you fish em .

The only major example of colur making a significant difference for me has been at different light levels. eg black at night as opposed to gold in sunlight!

I had a session not long ago that caught on every colour sp I had...then yesterday they only took one colour hb.

Another way to ask the question is what do you tie on first when you go fishing, as this is generally what you have caught the most fish on.

I always start with something in the natural Brown range, Motoroil or Pumkinseed, then move to the Greens and Purples if I'm not having much luck.

I very rarely fish with Flouro colours, or white, but thats my personal preference - I just don't like them.

If I was pinned down to the best colour, I'd be a bit vague and say Brown.............. works for me

I didn't think of it that way. The 1st softie I always put on is a bloodworm squidgy wriggler and hard body I flog the guts out of the gold/black fleck backed Oargee
