hi rob ill get the ball rolling

i ve been a keen swf fisherman for a couple of years now but have only ever targeted flatties when fishing in the river - never bream.
just wondering what retrieve works best when targeting bream??
also is a 9w setup overkill for them??

Evan, because the Bream are finaly getting easier to catch with everyday passing day you will find that if you start targeting them you WILL get fish. The beaut thing about fly-fishing for bream is that there are many new senarios. This keeps it challenging.

Perhaps the best way to target bream is by fishing anywhere there is rocks and timber. This type of structure produces fish on almost all tides. Fish the flies deep and slow. As the spin guy's will tell you most bream strikes occur when the lure or fly is doing nothing(called a do nothing retreive ) It is very deadly and accounts for a truck load of Bream. The fly choice can be varied from large crazy charlies to small clousers and anything that resembles a shrimp or baitfish. Just rember to fish it slow or at least mix it up. A nine weight is a little heavy for using all day, but will do the job fine. It will you allow effortless casts in our wonderfull screeming easterlies and southwesters.

Had a feeling it was you Chris, just as you drove past I very nearly went home and grabed the boat. Glad I didn't as I got soaked, shortly after and went home and watched DVD's.
Stages and myself picked up 16 fish yesterday thou.

yeah i am starting to get results on softies on bream.
had a nice fat one a week ago going 34cms but had nice big blue lips on it.
seriously fat bream are around in good numbers upstream and is some real good fun on light line.

Seriously, if you didn't sign up within a month or so, I was going to ask you to pop in anyway. My knowledge of flyfishing is very limited. The flyrod I had on layby at Rusty's I swapped for a second spin combo

Someone like yourself will be a great asset on the flyfishing board.

Read plenty of your articles in Wanglers etc , personally have never tried fly fishing and recently started using soft plastics and been having a ball.

I Know this is a fly fishing section and really fly fshing means having and uding a fly rod but heck ill tell the story any way. i thought id get a fly tying kit and got a few materials and bits and peices. I tied up a few clousers and went down the river with the spin rod and some split shots for weight. Had a flick around getting the flies right into the structure and whack i was on nice bream dropped near the shore kept on going then a nice flattie . Then i had to go but hey it was a good start cant weight to get the fly rod going. Im a happy chappy.

Josh I once did the same thing and worked wonders. However try tying your own jig heads(I used to use Mr Twister) Tied in yellow bucktail with some yellow or green flash, a better Flathead lure I have never used. Besides you can tie a bucket full and cost nothing to make. With the different weights you can cover any depth and take most species. Far more durable than soft plastic will ever be. The blowies can't get a good grip on the material.
