deception palaemon
G'day,
Has anyone had any problems with the paint cracking on deception palaemons? i got this one a few weeks ago and haven't used it yet and the paint is cracking. I've read another post on this forum about the lure spliting in half along the grain after casting into a pylon. not sure if these cracks are from the actual lure cracking (as most of the cracks are going in the same direction). To put it bluntly, I'd take it back and demand a refund/credit - that paint quality is crap.

Well it's not really the tackle shop's fault that the paint is bad. But something should be done about it, Maybe ask if they can call up the distributor and get a replacement.

I started using palaemons a few years ago. As well as the deceptoin nippers for flatties and Eps.I never had any problems with them then one day i went to the local Tackle shop to buy a couple of new ones, they didnt have any left!
So i asked the owner when he was goin to get more he told me that the owner or maker of the lures i think hes name was Paul Knellor had sold the company so it was going to be a while before he got any in. A few weeks went by before i went back to the shop to pick some up. After the first couple of times i used them (nipper and Palaemon) the bib fell out of one and the little eyes that the split rings go on also came loose. My mate had a similar problem so i havnt bought one since.

Ben I wouldn't be too worried about the cracking paint. Palaemons are a great little lure with a fantastic action.
Two or three years ago everone had some in their tackle bags, because the floatation & action you get from a timber lure is superior to an air filled plastic one. The original Knellor lures had SS screw in eyelets, looks like the one in your photo has a one-piece pressed panel that runs through the whole body, which provides a keel effect and strengthens the lure. You won't find too many of this version breaking along the wood grain. The longitudinal cracks in the pic make me think that the paint finish was quite thick and at some stage (hot day) it has shrunk against a dry lure body which had no give and had no where to go. OR the different rates of expansion of timber & stainless have cracked it from the inside?? I have seen Palaemons with almost no paint on them due to the number of bream hits they had taken, yet still caught fish. Don't think a few cracks will worry the scale boys. If you desperately want a cleanskin then take it back to the tackle store, I am sure they will swap it for you, don't think you will need to be too 'demanding'. As for the bibs, it is quite difficult to attach polycarbonate (or lexen) to timber. One material requires a chemical bond, the other a grain filling adhesive, so it is reasonable to expect some failures especially if they are being pelted against pylons, (although 3/3 is a bit tough on YD). Once again, manufacturers are usually keen to protect their name and integrity, so return a lure to them with no bib but with few signs of use, and I am pretty sure they will come good. In a market with hundreds of lures under 60mm reputation is paramount. Last edited by Mark M; 26-07-2007 at 07:56 AM. |

If you cast any HB into a pylon, just expect it to possibly crack. In my experience, deception palemons are not only a top class lure, but also good quality.
One thing to remember, with ALL lures, you can get the odd bad one. It's a lure I would suggest to have in your arsenal for sure. And one thing on bibs....... ALL lures you can crack them or whatever. Looking after your lures is another thing to do religiously.

kamikazeghost-
i agree that no lure should be expected to be pounded up against pylons etc. without damaging the lure, they just arn't designed to do that. mark m- i hope you are right about the metal running all the way through the lure, i don't like the thought of a wooden lure that might crack with just eyelets in it! the retailer (breammaster) was more than happy to give me a replacement. it sounds like this paint problem was just bad luck i suppose. they look like a good lure, nice slow float, so i will still try it out. Ben,
They are a great lure which unfortunately you obviously had one which just had one of those bad paint jobs. Happens. Work them nice and easy with a twitch retrieve inter-spaced with pauses. Try not to use the straight through roll retrieve unless they're going to be that aggressive from the word go. Subtle workings of a HB is a lot more effective in enticing a strike. The other great attribute with using lures such as the Palaemon and Attack Minnow lures is that you can work them on the surface as well. Same type of retrieve often called the "aggravated twitch".
