loosing lures
hi guys
i was fishing the snags in the murray river this weekend predominantly with hardbodies. i managed to pull a few out of the snags but in 2 sessions ended up loosing 3 sneakys to fish that wrapped me around the snags. i am new to fishing for bream with lures but have done quite a bit of mangrove fishing up north so im not new to lure fishing but up there you are using 40lb leader and 20lb main line. i was using 4lb fireline with an 8lb pen powerline leader with the drag set quite hard but the fish were still able to wrap me around the branches any tips on stopping them because i dont really want to be forking out for $20-30 worth of lures each session |

Tuna Fish em?
G'day Evan,
I lost an oar gee to one of the biggest Bream i have ever had the pleasure of fishing for today!. Mate the only advice i can give you is to be ready for that hook up and grab your spool to stop it spinning, and if you have a boat and an electric "KOTA" motor out of the danger zone quick smart. My fish just about ripped the rod clean out of my hands, I did every thing possible but thats the fun about it, it's you or them!! Good luck mate Geoff

thanks geoff
i dont mind loosing the lures if it has caught a fish but to loose them on the first fish can be very annoying. unfortuately im yet to buy a kota, cant really mount a bow mount on an inflatable very easily (any suggestions???) but i got my mate to motor out of some of tehe snaggs quick smart with locking up the spool like that will 4lb line readily snap??? i was a bit weary of that??? |

4lb Braid is tough!!!!!
Mate you have to remember that 4lb is rated to 2kg and maybe a little bit more. unless you have "GODZILLA the BREAM" on, you should be allright to give it a bit of stick and allow your rod to take the strain. It is good that you are working as a team with your mate to get out of the d.zone.
With your boat I think you are going to have to think outside the square and conjour up some injenious method for attaching a kota. Have you at least thought of a transom mounted one? It is awsome to have a riptide auto pilot foot controlled kota but the manual "cheaper" transom mount ones will do the job. you may even be able to mount the Riptide on the transom with a little Lateral thinking.

No more Lure
All I do is lock m and drag them out..... 4pd is mighty tuff......I watched Geoff get hammered by a very nice fish, only to have his favourite lure taken in a matter of seconds - and that was at the leader.... and there was no stopping this one. There were a few fish pulled from the session as well with Dwaynes 42 the best for the arvo.
Cheers Richo

yeah i was thinking of putting a sheet of ply over the front of the boat, putting supports and attaching one end to the center console and using it as a casting deck. im sure i could mount a bownmount onto the ply - thoughts???

DEFINATELY
There you go now your on the right track, I would build your deck and then get a good solid piece of timber or alloy as a mount for your "kota". I only say that cause i have belted mine when going over snags and into snags to retrieve lures. you will need to bolt it down to something that isn't going to snap if you tweek it. What is your keel made from cause i have my very own ally fabricator/welder who can do marvelous things with a boat, he gets alluminium at $3.00 a kilo and he is an awsome welder.
Send me an E-mail or call me on 94382852 a/h and maybe i can put you on to him. He did my livewells (you may be able to incorparate that into your deck for space) and they are bloody excellent . Regards Geoff paulic

sweet thanks mate. my keel is made of fibreglass but i was just playing around on the boat then and i can move the fuel tank under the center console which would free up sufficient room for a live tank that could probably double up as a seat as well.
right up the very front is a trough that holds the anchor etc so i was thinking about putting a floor with a hatch over it then having some sought of frame that would support a kota perhaps??? |

I think I posted it elsewhere on the site, but I try and muscle the fish to the surface as quickly as possible when I hook up in shallow, snaggy country, and then 'skate' the fish accross the water to the net - you don't give them a chance to get the tail thumping away and wrapping you up

Kev, I've got one of the Wilson LiveFibre rods that's a bit stiffer and it does the Job. I do it with my Procaster-X as well, I've just got to be a bit more gentle
