Hi All, I want to know how many of you remove the split rings from your Hardbody lures, and why?why not ?

I do on a few differnt lures, especially when having a tow point like that one. I usually do it with R2S Static Shads and notice that before Id taken it off it would work like a keel and push the lure to one side before flicking back and pushing the lure the other way.
I did a bit of slow trolling a few years back to watch the action and the problem was consistant. After taking the split ring off - no dramas, and easy to tune if needed. Also you dont have the edge on the split ring where you get the odd bust off. Havnt changed them on anything small though, just to fiddly.... cheers

I take 'em off and then use a very small clip. This set-up retains the "loop" while allowing quick and easy change over or lures. It's not laziness, its efficiency...

I take split rings off every tow point unless their is a hook there. Better presentation and better swimming action.

I tie uni knots and leave the split rings on - getting deep and staying deep is important to me when chasing bream on Bibbed minnows.
Suspenders minus the split ring can turn into floaters. I have better resuly when the fish cant see me. The further you are from the lure the better - this can mean getting the lure deep and keeping it there or casting along way away. There are always exceptions to the rule - but the exceptions make the rule

I take them off on most small bream lures like the rebels and ecogears as I hate tying line directly to split rings and I also prefer to use a lefty's loop knot to attach these sorts of lures.

yellow door, I agree totally, it will effect the bouyancy.
However, a great deal of the lures we use for bream are designed for fresh water, so 'suspenders' are usually floaters out of the pack. Changing the hooks to owners (which are lighter than alot of the cheap rubbish) will also effect the bouyancy. If you take a bit of care you can come pretty close to rebalancing the lures with experimenting with different brands of rings on the trebles, or some sticky weight. |

I take them off the tow points, unless they are on lures like Halco's. On these lures the metal piece isn't smooth enough to tie direct to, and will wear through your knot. That and the split ring also keeps that tow point in place.
It's up to you whether or not you want to take them off. The extra links created when tying a loop to a split ring can sometimes cause the ring and loop to bind, especially if you use a twitching/jerking retrieve. Check the rings. Good quality rings are properly closed, and do not have sharp edges. Cheap rings will open out, and either damage your line, or let it slip out (yes, it happens, trust me!!). |

I leave split rings on all my lures and i even add some on to the ones which don't have any but maybe I should take them all off.
