bream fly reels

g'day all

I'm after sum info about a fly reel to go with my new fly rod....
I have bought a rplxi sage 7 wt' 3p and need to buy a reel to go with it....
I'm after a large arbor reel, with a good cork drag, and salt water resistent components....?

i have been thinking about a loop traditional (as they are a cool looking reel), Orvis, waterworks purist, sage 3000 series, fenwick riverrunner .......any further sugestions on these models....?????

Last year "Freshwater Fishing Australia" the magazine had an article on large arbor fly reels, might be worth seeing if you can order a back-issue, or find a copy in your local library, etc.

I use a Shimano Ultegra 7/8 and it's really great and the construction is superb for bream fishing and for other fish.
nice locked drag for mulloway if you want to take them on also.
Think they are around $150-$170.
really nice reel.

At the moment i use a Waterworks ULA Force for just about all my fly fishing. The drag on it is probably overkill for fish like bream but as i use it on everything it does get a workout. It seems to handle the salt pretty well and there are no signs of corrosion. The line i use most often is the Sci Anglers striper taper clear intermediate.

I haven't used my fly gear for about ten years, I've got an old Shakespeare reel. It is a non-drag, metal spooled thing, typical trout style reel. I use it with a Daiwa Eliminator 7/8 wt carbon fibre rod and a 7 wt floating line (Scientific Anglers I think).
I've caught Bream, Mullet and Carp on it with Wooly Bugger type flies, mainly casting to fish sighted in the shallows at the Butter Factory wharf in Bairnsdale. The Carp were pretty funny as they steam off down the rivver like a tugboat or something. Slow and steady but strong, took a while to subdue :-)

The Okuma that was suggested is probably worth a look, Okuma seem to be very competitively priced as they try and gain acceptance in the Aust market, people with their spinning reels seem to be full of praise for them.

Hey Drew

The waterworks has some good reviews. What about the Scientific Angler 2 the LA Models i know a little cheaper and nastier than the Waterworks stuff.

Biggest factor would be the weight more so than the drag a seven weight can handle some decent sized fish. The drag really isnt a big issue as bream dont go down to your backing and its good wholesome fun sticking a bream clear of some racks.

thanks for they advice, it seems that the waterworks reels are very good.... i got to play with one yesterday in my fav toy (tackle)store.....

oh and that clear line is a great idea for spooky fish.....

i forgot about the sci/angler reels and will check them out

And there is also Abel and Bauer reels if you really want to blow some money.

I use a Shimano Ultegra 78 with a no;7 wf line on tailor and salmon, A superb little reel !

Have a look at the Pflueger range at Campbells.
They look the goods, and are very competitively priced!

I recently purchased a Snowbee XS which is a large arbour, however it has a sinthetic drag material. It is a solid constuction type rather than some of those light weight reels (SAGE, Waterworks, Loop) so it can handle a decent fish. It is mached to my Sage RPLXI 8 weight that I made. The reson for perchasing this reel is that its the lighest in its type of reel (large abour, solid constuction) and it wasnt as expensive as the Ross and Tibour and it has only recently been imported into Australia.It cost $460 and was ordered in from the importer. I couldent get the titanium for a few months so opted for black anodise which I am told do a beter job anyway. One artical I saw said they do have a cork drag but it seem that they dont?
