to braid or not to braid

Saw an add for Platypus 2kg braid in DohDohDohDohDohDohDoh yesterday. What does everyone think about braid or non braid for chasing bream? Is it worth paying the extra $$$$ for braid? How does it affect rod guides and even the reels? Are different knots required for braid? etc etc

Most of the guys on here use GelSpun line, which is a form of Braid. They all swear by it!, so it cant be bad!
The braid you talking about is one which hardly anyone on here has used yet, as its pretty new. I'm thinking of spooling my second reel with it in the future!
I think Ravin has been using it and doing some testing for Platypus, so it might be an idea to ask him!

It's really a no-contest. Braid wins every time. Most guys here use berkley fireline in either 4lb or 6lb (4 is most common). The new platypus stuff is supposed to be ok too.

Braid is expensive but makes a massive difference to what you can feel on the other end of your line. You don't need to fill your reel with it either, just fill with normal mono, and then tie on some braid for the last 125yds (that's the size of the smallest fireline spools that you can get).

Bream aren't marlin so you're not going to see your backing in normal fishing. You will need to respool the braid every so often as you loose line to snags, tangles etc.

It won't damage your reel or rod any more than mono.

You don't need different knots, but you should double the amount of turns you put in your knots when using braid as it has a tendency to slip.

I use Fireline and nothing else so far. So do most of the other guys I know. It makes a huge difference to feel.

OH yeah,
about the cost thing. Fireline lasts an incredibly long time compared to mono. I would say at least double! If you take that into consideration, the price is the same!!!

I was sent a roll of Platypus Braid in 4 pound to test so I have to confess I haven't a clue how it compares to Fireline. I am very happy with it so far but I want to give it a real flogging for a couple more weeks. It is the same diameter as 6 pound Fireline & casts very well. Early braids I found held a lot of water & sort of stuck together so after a couple casts distance dropped off but theres none of this with Platypus. You still get the odd loop or 2 in a long session but no more or less than Fireline but the big bonus I have found is if the get into a mess you can unpick it with Platypus very easily. It is limper than Fireline & I find that lets me keep in better touch with tiny jigs. Like I said I'm very happy now but after having a good session in the bad snags to torture test it I'll be happier. The other thing I like is its Australian made

is the platypus as hairy as the fireline. Fireline goes all hairy after a while.
Should be a good product.

yeah i go the fireline for my breaming, and the ither day when i was in k mart they had it for $22 that is cheap. i might go down to the local tackle shop to see if they have any of the platypus braid.

Sounds like nice stuff, i would rather stick with the platypus very nice stuff.
For mono i have been using the super 100 ina 6lb very thin and very nice.

Unless the Aussie product is crap compared to the OS product, I would prefer to buy Aussie made. I'm usin Fireline now but I reckon the next spool I buy might be the platypus if its standing up to the test.

Speaking of bream I can't help it I'm going right now!! Wade a flat casting a Mini Tank or maybe a Paleamon or ............a grass minnow in smoke /pearl. Its cloudy....the tides rising ... I'm gone I'll be fishing ten minutes after this post goes up
