Knots for line to leader

Any advice for a good knot for joining line (braid) to a leader (mono). I am currenty using a Uni knot, but sometimes the knot slips or the mono gets cut by the braid. Don't worry about line to tackle, the Clinch knot is a great one.

I've just started using a surgeon's knot. It is easier than most to tie on the fly (as in on the move, in wind, rocking on a boat etc)
It can be a pain with super long leaders but it is easy and strong.

How well does it fare against the braid?

You might find Flourocarbon leader may have a stronger knot strength, double uni should be sifficient though. Im reading Geoff Wilsons book in front of me at the moment, he says the Twisted Leader knot is the strongest for Gelspun to Mono. just saw that the Albright is OK as well. I always use Double Uni myself and it rarely lets me down. IMO find something that is easy for you to tie and that you have confidence in.

cheers

Thanks for the tip, though I'm not a big fan of Fluorocarbon, I prefer mono.

For me it's definately a 5 turn Surgeons knot. Very easy knot to tie and as yet has not failed me ( touch wood ).
May i ask why you don't like Flurocarbon?
It stands up to abrasion so much better than mono and is harder to see in the water too.

Simmsy;
Thanks for the advice on the surgeons knot. As for flurocarbon, I find that it is heavier/denser than mono so for lures like the Smith Towadi, it drags it underwater. Also, the brand that I used (this is one of my friends rod+reel) called Asso or something was extemely stiff, while I find that any half decent clear mono is quite limp, floats for a while, and is still not very visible.

If you have any fluros that don't drag lures like the Towadi under water and are limp, tell me and I'll try it out (unless it is too expensive).

P.S. Simmsy, did you get my PM that I sent you a couple of days ago?

hi fisherman 1,

I use the double uni knot works for me and hasn't let me down yet.

Umm on the subject of flurocarbojn leaders you could have been using a leader with a high breaking strain and this would affect the action of any lure. So if you wish to try a fluro leader again I would suggest use something lighter like 4lb and look for a softer leader like yamatoyo.

It is interesting you stick by mono as that weakens underwater so there is more chance that mono will break at the knot with the braid. But saying that deffinately stick to what you are confident with.

cheers lee

hey fisherman1.The knot i use is tricky but the best i've used for casting and knot strength aswell. if you can do a bimini your half way there from that you do what is called a mid knot its kinda like a cats paws splice.like i said not easy but very affective.mark morris may be able to explain it better (i taught him&hes a teacher so prob explain it better than me) but i can show you easy if your down mandurah way.

I agree

I agree with the poster above (mantacboss).

It is the connection I use, by preference...

Bimini Twist Double with Ruzzuto whip for the braid, and comnnect that to your Leader loop with a cats paw connection!

Doing this in such light lines as you breamers use might be fiddly to do on a boat in comps tho...

When salty fly fishing - we tend to use 50 pound Harro's Bionic Braid for the Bimini Double Rizzutta Whip - and often time s- something Like Harros Hard Alloy in 20 Pound for the leader loop catspaw!

If you find the 100 twists in braid are taking too long to tie on the boat in comps - i suggest a cheap 12 V battery drill from K Mart, with a plastic coated cup hook in the chuck!

Just make a loop in your braid the length you want for the Bimini double, pop it over the cup hook and press the trigger and count the twists..."one, two, miss a few, 99, 100)...

Seems to work for me - takes all the time delay out of tying new bimini twist doubles! The rizzuto whip obviates the need for fiddly pull thru loops etc and again speeds things up & simplifies the system!

Hope this is of some help!

Cheers!

I personally think a bimini twist is over-kill for bream fishing, but to each their own. I run with a double uni and its yet to fail me.
