thin bail arm v.s thick bail arm
i've noticed that some reels have a very thin metal bail arm (eg stellas, stradics) and yet some have the tubular (thick) bail arms (luvias, affinitys, capricorns).
What are the differences between them? Are there any specific advantages for these differences? Cheers, zebbo

the air bail is stronger and looks cooler
and meant to be more effectivemaximum rigidity and strength with minimum weight Last edited by Zac 87; 21-03-2006 at 08:35 AM. |

They are "braid friendly" according to packaging. Always seem like a good idea. Look up a daiwa site and you will get the official reason

For some reason I have always liked the thinner ones but I think its all up to the buyers opinion really. thick would have to be stronger.

i have a shimano reel with their normal thin bail and when i compare it to the air bail on my daiwa reels if just feels so weak and flimsy.
personally i wouldnt buy another reel without an air bail |

Reels with thin bails arms will catch significantly less fish than those with fat bail arms.

yeah i agree with the thief
infact reels with thin bails actually deter fish from feeding.

i dont actualy think either is stronger, because the thicker "air bails" are actually thinner metal, they look thicker because they are hollow. A thin bail arm is thicker more compact metal.
But from what you guys hav been saying about thin bail arms has deterred me from buying a stradic, arrrrgggghhhhh this is confusing

Actually Zebbo, a tubular structure is stronger in most loading situations than a solid metal piece. It also weighs less.
As for bail friendly, I'm guessing it has something to do with contact area as the line slides towards the roller during pickup. |

there is probly little comparison because if the thinner bailarm is much weeker than the thicker ones then major reel companies would change them all to thick ones. as we see that there are thin and thick ones i think that there isnt a big difference. stradics wont hav thin bail arms if a thin bail arm was week. for an expensive reel they wouldnt hav them being week cos they wopuld brake and loose money and popularity
id still get a stradic... just be careful wid it |

wrong
the tube is far stronger and ligher than the basic wire bail found on many reels. i have a stradic and i find the bail to be very flimsy compared to daiwas air bail system. i dont know why shimano havnt got their own tubular bail system. |

hey
Yeh, my capricorn has the air bail thing and it is really nice. I will have a new shimano reel soon and thats one thing that they really do need. For me the major advantage of it is that it looks better and its lighter... So i like the air bails better.

this is sum crazy shiza,,, i mean stellas hav a thin bail arm,, why wood they hav this if an air bail is "better". Wouldnt shimano do every possible thing to ensure the reel was the best it could possibly be???
