White grubs...

G'day guys,

Just thought I'd let you know about recent successes I've had on the humble white grub in the Swan. Now I know the natural colours work even in dirty water, but after consistently not getting fish on natural coloured Sliders, even though they obviously work for some (and seem to love Kurt), I've begun to use pearl and glo colours to good effect in the water from Matilda Bay upwards.

I've picked up fish in Matilda bay, down the 15m depths of CYC, Barrack St, and up at Ascot canals. The pearl white colour in the Bream Master grub and the Salt Water Assassin seems to have done the trick, and I even admit to catching fish on white Sliders (the only Slider colour that seems to like me).

The w/e only confirmed this with a couple of fish lost on white grubs and two nice ones hooked in two casts at RPYC in the murky shallows by the slipway.

The only thing I've found to work as well in this very discoloured water (discoloured mainly due to the howling gale stirring up the sediments in shallow) is things like gold scorps, but the white grubs are so easy to skip under the ropes of the yacht clubs that it's definately worth a shot.

Just thought I'd mention this as I'm sure there are many who ignore plain white, because it is just that... plain! Mind you blue/purple pearl pepper in the Atomics looks the goods as well... yet to try them.

Anyone else had good successes on white grubblies?

After the weekend I am kicking myself for having such tunnel vision and not working a wider area and using different lures. I have a new found interest in the softies after being stuck on hard bodies for a while, and I plan to build up my collection and work new area's.
We'll have to try out some of those plastics next wed Chris

Yeah Geoff, I'm heading out tomorrow with a bloke from work, so I'll see whether there are any decent fish way upstream. If not, we'll try Perth area and I'll be using the white grubs for sure...

I got the white grub idea watching Tim the Bream and have been trying out the Assassins.

Only prob I had comp day was that the assassins were being munched by blowies

Jeff it's a bit like that ain't it? Geez they're hard to get outta the ribs in the bottom under the floor! I went throught about 80 plastics on the w/e...

No worries, it was a good day and 'twas a nice bream you got at RPYC. I thought it was gonna go at least 800/900g!

from the book i have been reading, it talks about how colours pretty much all diminish to blue (sea) or green (river) with depth. fish have eyes that are adjusted in seeing colours best in a certain range (they can see the slightest contrast) based on if they are sea dwellers or river/lakes dwellers etc.

fish has only 2 blind spots and they are just behind them or just in front of the mouths but apart from that, they see ALL around, up down sideways.

the reason why white works well in deep water is because most bright (bright means they reflect the highest amount of light) colours will end up either green or blue anyway, and so will white, but white is the purest of colour and reflect the highest percentage of light than any other colours) AND it has the highest contrast against the depth (ie, if the fish is in mid water, it looks down and sees everything fading to dark and if it looks up and it's a cloudy day with a bit of chop, it would see the glarey reflection of the underside of the water hence a sillouette works best on the surface.)

I've taken a few bream on white grubs. I think white is an often overlooked colour & it is a proven fish taker on a large number of species. Kingfish , Mackerel Tuna , Frigate mackerel , Tailor & Salmon all love white flies & thats just to name a few.

in brisbane in the raby bay canals there are an abundance of pike and because there main source of food down here is white bait we use white softies to great effectand white hardbodies from the smilin jacks range, they love white but u go through a lot of softies because of there teeth so we try to use hardbodies mos of thetime.

bought a pack of white breammaster softs.. it was a toss up between the glowwhite or pearlwhite.. chose the pearls. what do u think?

Well glow you can use at night as well as during the day... Plus there isn't a huge amount of diff. between the pearl and glow in normal daylight.

Having said that, I have been using pearl cause I have some of each!
