How long is too long out of the water?
Hi guys & gals, my question is how long is too long out of the water for a two stroke engine? The reason I ask is I have recently looked at a 375 Seajay Angler with a 15 hp Yamaha for sale that is 3yrs old but the whole rig looks like new. The guy selling it has receipts which show a ten hour service was done on it just recently from the place of purchase. The guy says it's only done 4 small trips which equates to about 8hrs. He seems genuine and the motor looks like it's brand new and not a mark on it, even the prop is almost unmarked. Any advice would be good.

I was told that two strokes seem to prefer a regular run and don't really like being left for extended periods. In saying that however it sounds like you have stumbled over a beauty that's done very little work.
That's a difficult question - how long is too long. That's pure speculation depending on the hours it has done, whether it's been looked after, regularly serviced, undercover, flushed after use, etc etc Do the standard checks on it, hear it running etc and put your mind at rest. If he's got that paperwork there you have proof of the hours done (assuming it refers to the same motor). Don't forget to bargain hard and get the price down. There's nothing better than to walk away with a near new item for a song HTH

I use to have a Yammie 25 until it was stolen a couple of months back. It was not used more than 6 times a year for 6 years and always started with in 2-3 pops of the rip cord.
I would say if you are keen on it ask the bloke if you can take it to a marine mechanic and get them to check it out. |

One thing to get checked would be the water pump impeller. Might have gone hard and brittle if sat for a couple of years.

Best thing you can do is choose a yard you can trust and get a relationship going. Get them to check the engine out for you and see how you go from there.

Not long ago found a tri hull with a 60 hp rude hanging off it, had'nt been started in 3 1/2 years, done the deal and off i drove with a boat and bits.
The first job was to find out if the motor was a dud, fuel , battery and then we had all systems go fired into life like it was started yesterday, carn't say the same about reverse{ bloody electric shift} Spose the moral of the story is it dosn't matter how long it sits for it's gunna need things like a water pump{maybe, mine didnt}and a general check just to make sure it dos'nt turn pear shaped |
