Bicycle Technology

Seems Shimano have combined their R&D and come up with a reel with no preset drag system, but a variable, lever action drag.

Use them in Japan for crazy rock fishing and freshwater stuff if I remember correctly..Daiwa make some schmicko ones..There were a couple models that had both drag systems also. Would be great.

Was so tempted to get one last year but did not! Might just have to this time!

The reel looks hot, but that lever action drag system will not be foolproof. Yes, picture those cyclists who absolutely stack when they hit the wrong brake lever too hard. Now picture an angler with buck fever who presses a little too hard as he hold his rod in a white knuckle death grip while a decent fish is oss to the races.

Surely there's some preset drag, after which you only press to add a little more?

Not for me though. I'd probably chop out the mechanism.
