Reel Damage

Hey guys, just a question...i plan to use my kastor 2000 to chase some cod with a 3-5kg penn pinpoint and 10 lb matrix pro.My cause for concern arose the other day when I was fishing a larger hb than normal-a size that i will prob use for cod later-around that 10cm mark.I dont know wether it was just coz i waznt used to fishing that size lure or what, but it felt like the reel was under a bit of strain Is this going to cause damage to my reels' gears and shorten its life span?Or is it just a case of inexperience using bigger lures and the fact that I was using 4lb fireline and a 2-4kg rod?

Cheers,
Nathan

yer, I was thinking more in the retrieve, the constant resistance of the larger lure....Does anyone else have any opinions?

Cheers,

Hi Nathan is because the reels gearings arnt ment to cope with loads like that (other than on fish of coarse). If you up sized your reel to a 4000 (better suited for cod) then your gear ratio will change making it easier to wind. It wont put so much stress on the reel and wrists either.

cheers, Nathan

So do you guys think it will damage my reel?I mean it is going to be for one week only, and probably the only time i will use it for cod all year.Is one week of use really goin to do significant damage?

Cheers,
nathan

You colud minimise the strain by using the rod to do the retrieve and just wind up the slack hence reducing the "strain"...
