Rod Building

Gday All

I have always wanted to have a go at building a fishing rod and have decided now would be as good a time as any. In researching on the net I found that Ian Miller did a publication through Modern Fishing entitled "The Australian Rod Crafter", it is meant to be the ducks nuts. Has anyone seen a copy in any tackle stores or book stores?? Has anyone got a copy they may be prepared to lend me?? I am asking a bit here but has anyone got a rod lathe or rod building bits and pieces they may want to part with?? Thanks in advance. BTW I am Perth based.

if you log onto mudhole.com they have all the rod building gear info you could want.
i have a rod builders starter kit for sale it is a wooden frame with tension bar,you hold it in the jig & roll it by hand,
it does the job & will get you started,
you can have it for $25.00

I havent got the book but I get the mag mate, and have the issues with a few different bream rod set ups in which have been published over the last 18 months...most if, not all are using Fuji and Samari gear...his pieces are always followed by an ad for Fuji.

If you are interested i could scan them and send them on...wont be able to do it till Monday sorry....already left work for the day ....to go fishing....shhhh

just jumped on the web at home to check the weather for the weekend, and see if we will go deep or breaming in the river.....

Mudhole is a great site, they wont sent blanks to Aus anymore though so dont bother drooling over the great gear they have...

Do a trawl through google as well, because I found a site a while back that was very good...had pictures of the steps etc...

Tim, if you ring Ian Miller at the Australian Rod Builder he might be able to help you with the book or at least point you in the direction of someone who may stock them. Just a thought.

hi all,

the samuari i have dribbled on about on the forums a couple of times now is nearly finished. its the first rod i have ever built and its not really as hard as it looks. so BB go for it mate its great fun!!

i have bludged most of the gear of my old man, which made things a hell of a lot easier, so i probably should not offer to lend it as they are not mine ..... yeah that would be wrong but i have got one of the rod crafter mags, heaps of info in them, and combined with the stuff of the net i have been able to sort out enough to come up with somehting which i reckon will look fairly decent for a rank amature.

i have taken some step by step pics which also show the basic setup i used which i'll post up once i have them down loaded for anyone whos interested to have a gander at....

Hey Bundy the recipes in the Rodcrafter mags are specifically around Fuji's "New Guide Concept" jargon they thought up when the brought out the Alconite guide I think...anyway the stuff on the Fuji website is ooooold...maybe 3 years in fact because for instance they don’t cover the "Noodle Blanks" like the SX01 or SX02, which are the recommended bream blanks.

I have found 3 different recipes published for the SX01 and 2 for the SX02 so there are a few ideas around for the same blanks.

You can try out different recipes without having to tape down all the guides though.

After I've glued on the handle and reel seat, and have measured out the guide spacings on the blank I slide on thin (3-5mm) slices of silicone tube (the same green fluoro stuff you can buy to make herring rigs with) down to the spots where each guide foot will sit.
Then after filing and polishing your guides’ feet -spend the time and do it properly as even tiny burrs are the quickest way to damage a graphite blank, you can slip each guide under the band of tubing, carefully not scratching the blank.

I then attach the reel I intend to use and check the action by running the line thought the guides and loading up the rod at around 45°…easier done with a mate or patient wife.
By standing sideways to the loaded rod you can experiment with your spacings just by sliding the thin band holding the guide along a fraction…..
I find this saves heaps of time traumaring about what spacings is right for the blank…..

Its like breaming mate…rod building is just another addiction to keep you in the shed late at night….
