Penn Affinity 1000
Penn reels have been a popular topic around here for a while, but I was wondering if I could get a bit more from those of you who have had experience with them.
I am currently looking at picking up a Penn Affinity 1000. I have had a play around with one in a store and was impressed with its solid feel and action. They look pretty shmick too. I would grab one right away but am unsure how they compare durability wise with comparable Daiwa's and Shimano's. I have read a few positive first impressions on the reels around this this board but was wondering if anyone who uses them has come across any long term problems/durability issues? I would like to avoid picking up a reel that won't be too dependable down the track. Thanks for your time and effort! |

I've had my Penn Affinity 1000 for about 9 months now. Used often. Hasn't missed a beat yet. Nice robust yet smooth little reel.

I have three of them and they are all great. I fish my gear really hard so if there were any problems im sure they would have surfaced by now. Even if there is a possible long term problem, there is a great reel support centre that will fix it fast. Lots of my posts have me stating this but i compare them to the daiwa capricorns in features. To me the only difference is that they are a few grams heavier. But the price difference is nearly $100.
I must point out that i am associated with Penn though and yet these are my humble opinions from a personal angling point of view. They feel great and im sure you wont be dissapointed. Good luck in your choice. |

This will probably draw some flak, but I reckon the Affinity is about the best value for money full featured reel around. I bought one for my son, but end using it along side all my other "expensive reels".
I put it ahead of my Capricorn, and the similarly priced Okuma Inspira is not in the same league. I'm not talking from bias here, I own/have owned everything I'm comparing it to.

Thanks for the thoughts and help gentlemen. Cash-flow realities meant that I ended up going for a nice deal on a Berkley Dropshot and Shimano Sienna, which I am very happy with.
My mates are getting keen on this whole fishing thing now though, so there is the possibility of selling the Sienna and upgrading to an Affinity in time... Thanks again. |
