I enrolled to do an Outboard Motor Maintenance course at Tafe, in Carlisle. I have since learned to service my motor and will save heaps on maintenance costs, i replaced my impeller last week, $35 in parts is all it cost me. Ring your local boat dealler and find out how much it would cost to do that service, It only took me half an hour and used only basic tools.
I also found out you should replace your impeller every 12 months, mine was Ratshi- (t) . Next week she'll get new plugs, gear box oil, lube up (Dave Press Loves a good Lube up), i am now a god damned Mechanical Tyranosaurus and i didn't need one single bandaid!!!!!

A rebore and a new set of nipples were the technical specifications - does the course you went on equip you for that Geoff?

If you have a boat do yourself a favour and do one of these courses. Like geoff i did mine at Tafe. Just proves you can learn something in a class room/workshop. Just wish I had my boat back to practice on. Boats and fire don't mix

Pete, the course i think is around the cost of a service $125-$150 and your local Tafe runs them. Jamie from Hayway Marine here in Perth in Kewdale is the teacher and we turn up once a week on a tues night, they go for around 6 or 7 weeks.

Yes Evan the course does cover 4 strokes, do you reckon Dave could take that many????? before he screams like a startled possum?????.

I inspected the seals and checked the colour of the oil and replaced it. By checking the colour of your gearbox oil you can tell whether any seals are gone, it's quite an easy thing to do, once you have done a Tafe course.
I reckon the next time i have to take it back to a Yamaha Dealer will be in 2 years time, by then it will need a Power head service which consists of replacing all your power head gaskets.

Do yourself a favour, do the course, I give it 11 fingers out of 10

I replaced my Thermostat and made sure the electrical system is all mickey mouse, seriously if you own a boat with either a four or two stroke motor, big or small do the course you'll save yourself a packet.

Do they fill you in on the more techo developed motors as well with EFI and computers and stuff?

Sounds like a bloody good option, but I suppose 'self servicing' voids your warrantee............... that wasn't really a question, I just wanted to say 'self servicing'
