Yeah I figured thats what you meant

The ones I've been missing hook ups on have all been leaving scuff marks around the tail or ripping the mullet clean off -

The takes from the ones I miss can be very slow and smooth. Like they're just gliding up to the bait and their momentum loads the rod.

First you see the rod tip jiggling as the mullet gets nervous. Then the rod would slowly bend over into a solid curve and just hang there for a second before all hell broke loose - or the fish spat it.
(I was fishing in gear with stiff drags to start out with)

The dacron sounds like its worth a shot - I just need more rods to try out all the theories at once

I'll give the flouro carbon a try and if that doesnt work - dacron will be next

making progress!, i try to have the drag set loose so they can take line without them knowing to much, but then if im using a spin reel i use a circle so when i franticially tighten the drag i have half a chance, or if u use a lever drag overhead its just up the drag and strike if using j or penertrator hooks, love it when the bait starts scooting around, definatly know somethings up then haha, if you cant find dacron try some heavy braid, i get mine free usually when i only ask for a few meters to make assists or what not.

Yeah I'm using "Bait-Runner's" so I've decided to actually start using the feature

Thanks for the advice

Larry, there's a spare rod in my shed, spooled & ready, also have a left over spool of some 30lb braid for those stingers.

Hey Larry, I'm definitely no expert when it comes to Yarra Jewies, but these are some things I've tried and observed. Some people may disagree, but that what this forum stuff is all about.

With the loose assist hook hanging under the livie, I've had several runs but only one hook-up. I dont do it any more.

With the stinger in the tail, I've found that it's a constant bait change and checking. Often getting the livie tangled or damaged by the line running across its back. No hook-ups so I dont do that any more either.

My greatest success has been with a small single hook through the back, just in front of the rear dorsal fin (whatever its called). I have not had a miss yet hooking this way. The bait swims really well and lasts forever, and it also places the hook where most of the bite marks have been using other methods. I've used this method for the last year, and has accounted for six fish at varying sizes, and only one bait ripped off (I'm calling the culprit a big Bream).

I hope this helps. Shoot me a PM when you're going and we'll compare notes.

Id offer some suggestions - but a man who rigs mullet in ways I'd never dreamed of - probably has already dreamed up some thing better than I can come up with

I'm all about the bling when it comes to bait rods

A cheap 2 piece "Jarvis Walker" fibreglass is ok for the fishing I do. I havent tested on any Big Jewies yet - but it can break the seal on a big stingray that has suction cupped itself to the bottom

my jw tuff tip 10ft beach rod is without a dout a rod i know ill break before it does! im pretty horrible, ive got a $10 esky i can strap to the rear rack thing but will spend 60bucks instead of 30 on a smaller set of lip grips so they will fit in instead of spending $20 on a bigger esky. trying to find a spot to mount a 3ft rod tube currently, dream is to go down the south west of WA and be completly self supported, dreaming hard just gotta get the time off work!

An xr650 would get you where ever you wanted to go - but Its going to take some problem solving to make sure the 10 footer is coming with you

Bush bashing along goat tracks with a 10ft "Tuff Tip" will put its name to the test

I've lost the tips off my rods by forgetting how tall they are when passing under branches - If I can ride under a branch with my arm pointing to the sky - I know the tips on my 2 piece surf rods will be safe.
