Maxxum V's Riptide

Guys & Girls I am hoping for your comments on the pro's and con's on the MinnKota Riptide up against the MinnKota Maxxum.
I know there are lots of comments on each already but I am yet to find a thread that puts these two electrics head to head!
Give us your opinions please!!

Simmsy,
I have used both extensively and will offer the following info for you.
The RT is great if you like the autopilot function but for simple ease of use I go the Maxxum every time.
I have a Maxxum 80lb on my current boat and my regular fishing partner has a RT and it is so much easier to use the Maxxum than the RT. Apart from the inherant foot pedal probs and the issue of the AP and battery issues (goes wonky when the battery gets a little low), the RT is quite slow on the turning due to the servo motor.
The only issue I have with the Maxxum (abd All Terrain) is the size of the pedal but it doesnt take long to get used to it.
For me, Maxxum every time

Brad,

So you got the new rig?

Mine came standard with the motorguide and i had no qualms keeping it on after the first use.

Cable steer although its touchy around swelly areas (just have to learn not to keep on the pedal) is really good. Just the responsiveness and the lack of pedal issues is really good. I would suggest getting an anode for the maxxum if you go that option.

My autopilot was good too but too many times when i was leccying around snags trying to retrieve a line, i didnt have the turning speed to avoid some lumps of wood. And after a while it just did circles on me. I do miss being able to set a couple a settings and not have to touch a thing but the cable steer is so simple and has less things to go wrong.

I always say i think the riptide is a lazyier more relaxed style of fishing(don't get upset that's what i use also ) and the maxxum is more direct and a bit more hard core or touny ready due to the lack of porblems they have. None..

The cable steer you are on all the time with one foot where with the riptide you use a tap tap style and then leave it untill you need to make corrections

I hope that makes sense

I find the RT way easier to use, spent all last week using a maxxum and got by but i`ll go RipTide every time as I reckon they are easier to use. And the Maxxum gave up the ghost after 3.5 days of hard work - and trust me when i say its pretty new, so they have problems of their own. Probably sitting at BLAs doorstep as im writing this.

cheers

the RT is easy to use, and easy to manouevre. But as mentioned, it runs on a circuit and not a cable like the maxuum. Once in a while, the circuit board may need replacement. Two buddies of mine have had the RT board sorta blow up. But, replacement is hassle free.

If you like a flat pedal that when you press it moves in the direction your brain tells you too, then the RT is fine.

The direct cable of the maxuum is an advantage as it doesn't have the circuit board qualms of the RT. Yes, it is more of a hardcore tourney electric and its pedal can be a bit of getting used to, however, once the brain functions on that plain, it's a nice electric to use.

They are both very good models and depending on your personal preferrence, they'll do the job sweetly.

Sorry to hijack your thread mate, but what about the corrosion of the maxxum, does it void any warranties putting it in salt water

cheers scott

I believe that any salt water damage or use can void your warranty. I would double check with BLA though.

Basically if a unit is damaged due to corrosin it wont be covered for that repair and to be honest if you clean and look after your unit the rust will be a minimal issue The anode really does nothing. Its more to do with the electric's internially..

I have owned 2 Maxxums and 2 AP's and I love the Maxxums with no service issues.

The Auto Pilot was great for trolling but working large boats in racks and tight areas they suck!

In the end I had 3 foot pedels and a hand controller for my AP just to make sure I had a working one all the time.

So if you like a bit of trolling get a AP if not go a Muxxum.

Greg
