So have you tried any of you own lures yet Dagga?? And how have they gone? It will be interesting to see if your creations do as well as they look they will.

I tested them out today just to see if they swim not so much to catch fish and i was so impressed with the way they swam considering first time i tried a few of them they just twirled.
Im really not a HB kind of fisherman so i might leave the testing to some one that knows what there doing (i cant even get a redfin on a ecogear or a strike pro)
By the looks of them compared to some proper HBs i got they will work good because they have a nice action and a good rise.

To make them it takes about 15 minutes give or take to carve with a rotary kit thingy and then i gotta make a suitable bib and i whedge it in place (5 minutes allowing stuff ups) then melt lead into them and test how they sit and whether they need more or less(Depends on how much they need adjusting but normally about 10 minutes). Then i normally leave them for a day to dry properly then i glue bibs in with premade holes for the wire (gotta let them dry another night to make sure) then i paint and then the next day if they are dry i hope to hell they swim!
Its hard to give accurate times because i normally carve a few at a time then adjust weights of all of them at the same time and then glue bibs on at same time and paint at same time so individual times are hard to know also i dont normally set time to make them i just make a few when im not busy.

Now i got the action right im gonna foccuss on better paint jobs!
the orange and black one looks ok but im far from happy with it. i need spray paint i reckon to get rid of the brush marks.
No point sanding them back neatly if you have thick brush lines on the finnish.

I hope that didnt bore you guys

Homemade HBs

Hi Dagga

This was a project I started a while back, using Western Red Cedar, light & easy to shape, be careful of the dust however. Aussie Beech is also a good medium but harder to source.

The bibs are polycarbonate (bullet proof) and the centre wire is Stainless Steel MIG welding wire.

Finishes

Nail Varnish, clear or coloured is "acetone" based and not usually compatable with "thinners" based paints, but buy the cheapo bottles at the supermarket or weekend markets, from the girls (or boys) who have changed their mind about colours again.

Polycarbonate can be purchased or begged from the plastics dealers, "menzels, mulfords, etc, check out the yellow pages.

Western Red Cedar is used for timber panels and linings and you should be able to scrounge some, same with the welding wire from engineering shops.

My first "kit" came from e-bay, Blinky in the NT flogs them and was a good starting point, but I suggest scrounging, as most tradesmen and suppliers were happy to give me stuff when I explained my lure making fetish.

Cheers for the advice mark they look pretty good.
I reckon in order to make my lures more alike i will have to use simmilar methods your using and cut them the same shape from a template but what im doing now they are pretty much all unique. I wanna be able to make them well enough to sell eventually so im gonna have to make them all alike.
How do you cut the shape out?
