Berkley GENIII Dropshot IM6 Field Test
Model Tested:G3DS702-13
Line Weight:1-3kg Length:7.0ft Pieces:2 Reel:Tokushima 1000 Line Weight:2kg Visual impression of the as tested rod was pleasing. Solid color and design, allthough could do without the "X-Factor Vin Diesel" tattoo above the grip, but all gripes aside,a very attractive blank. Fuji Alconite guides and Fuji IPS reel seat is definately a plus, and i found the guides well spaced, and yes,the seat matched the 1st runner ( Pflueger take notice ) IM6 Graphite was strong, great for SP's,and whippy enough for long casts, and manipulating poppers,perfectly.Impressive.This rod can cast, using a 6g Popper,i was definatley throwing them further than the Pfluger Trion.... High Density Grip System was easily up tp the task, but i feel that a corp grip would better suit the blank,as "feel" was much less than my Pfluger Trion 1-3kg.Very Comfortable. As far as the HDG goes, time will tell as how it will age. For a 2 piece rod,i did not find it as "rigid" as others, and was quite surprised as how "integrally balanced" the outfit felt. Using a 11 SS316 BB "Tokushima" 1000 size reel, the outfit was very comfortable to use. Catching numerous species on Bribie Island over the weekend, the rod felt more "powerful" than the Trion, and was able to definately give more stick,a testament to the blank. On one fish,a solid 30 something cm @ the fork Squire, the rod's fighting action was definately on the money,a perfect linear curve, and took the fishes weight easily, and gave back more than it recieved. All up,a great rod for the $$,strong, usuable, quality components and definately Field Ready, could easily double its application;from a Finesse Bream Rod,to chasing down Big Flatties and throwing little slugs for Tailor,Trevally and Queenfish. This rod has potential.... Wait a few more months, and these will be had for a song....the perfect back-up rod. Tight Lines ! |

Which did you prefer out of the Dropshot and Trion?

I loved the Trion for its weight, the sexy wraps in the graphite when its glistened in the sun,the beautiful cork grips, the balance and the fact its a Pflueger.
However,i went through 2 of them in 4 months, due to the fact that the reel seat was not properly alligned and it was struggling to cast 10grams,and snapped in 1/2 really put me off.... The actual material used is so thin, and i mean thin,i was quite surprised. I am very happy with the GENIII,as its got all the aspects of the Trion, but i honestly do feel that its quality is slightly better. The blank does feel stronger, and its weight is basically the same as the Trion. It does lift the fish a bit easier, probably because it has a thicker taper down low....and its tip is a bit stronger. I dont think the grips do it justice,i feel it would benefit more from cork.. The color is acceptable, and its loaded with Fuji everything. Great value for $$$.... |

Totally unnescissary. Bad call.
Thanks for the review mate. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate this kind of info for a rod I was looking to buy... I was thinking of doing my own little thread for a majorcraft rod.. Will keep an eye on how these are received. Also maybe some 90 degree angle load pics would be good.. Light weights to see how easily it responds, and escalating in certain increments to as much weight as you're prepared to load her up with.. You can do this with a coke bottle (I doubt you'll put anywhere near a kilo up for deadlift) and just add more and more measured amounts of water as the test progresses.

I wish i could have known a little bit more on the Trion before i bought it,now those who want one will be able to check for Reel-Seat-to-Guide Allignment, and perhaps know that throwing a 10 gram slug may not be the best option,or the fact that its so light, due to its wafer thin graphite ! As for the GENIII,atlease people are aware that the taper is different to the Trion, and that the Trion's tip is a bit more whipper to the GENIII,even though the Line Rating is the same.....as far as the picture stating a great story....its not my place to question some1s sexual orientation !!! |
