Shakespeare Deceiver DCV1025X
Model As Tested : Shakespeare Deceiver DCV1025X Features: 9 Ball Bearings One-way Clutch instant anti-reverse bearing Machined and anodized aluminium spool New hybrid body design combines metal and graphite parts for a lightweight and durable reel body Metal body with metal side cover for precise gear alignment Anti-twist Titanium coated line roller and Sure-Click Bail Machine cut pinion gear Metal handle with Comfort-Grip knob Smooth multi-disc drag system Left/right convertible fold down handle On/off anti-reverse Model Line Capacity Weight Bearings Gear Ratio DCV1025X 105m/2kg 207g 10 5.2:1 http://www.purefishing.com.au/reels/...deceiver-spin/ First impression was the paintjob.GMH fans would love it,Tiga Mica Pearl. Upon taking of the spool, i noticed the multi disc drag gear, which mainly consists of 2 fibre washers, different widths,a SS316 bearing, machined metal washer and the followed by the Digi-Cut gears.Twin disc system. Spool ofcourse is Aluminium, drilled and ported, solid internals.Looks good.Except, brand sticker looks cheap. Will eventually crack and fall off. Solid body sealing by the way of good size SS316 nut washer and probably a SS316 steel retaining clip. This reel is light, the Alum Spool and line makes a difference, but its still light. 207grams without line, not bad. Comfortable grips, but sort of cheap looking, which is probably why it was $70. 9 Ball Bearings and 1 One way Roller is a good thing, but obviously bearing quality would be poor.Cheap bearings cant operate under extreme contamination from Salt,Sand,Dirt.Time will be a factor on how long this reel can withstand punishment. Nice Bail Arm action, light, and spool and arm engage without fuss.Titanium Coated Ball bearing line roller. The standard. The fish i caught over the weekend, other than the the 32 @ TF,were small, some maybe cracking just over 22,but most about 15-20. Drag worked extremely well.Fine tuning is superb. One of the better ones i have found.Should load up to 4kg.As most reels of this size are capable of. Peeling line of through the roller at a decent weight, the line pulled through well the Titanium Coated Line Roller, with no grinds or bumps...so a nice drag....impressed.Needs decent lube. Load up with my fave line,it had no problems performing as it should. I was throwing poppers and plastics around for hours, and it performed flawlessly. Maybe i will throw a bit of oil in in,run in that cheap grease in,pull it appart, and re-pack with some quality muck. Was a bit weary of buying a Shakespeare,as they seem to have dropped of after selling out to Kmart Krue, but i do honestly feel that they have manufactured a solid price reel.....time will tell... But i do remember a time when the name standed for good quality tackle. And early 80's gear was always classed as good quality. Good reel, value for $$,a bit of a bling thing going on,but i have seen worse...overall a solid addition to anyones tackle. And maybe it also needs to come with a full-exploded view reference,it does come with instructions and also how to tie a knot, but no break-down.Doh. " Pimp My Balls " !!
Cheap un-sealed/un-shielded SS316 Single Row Radial Ball Bearings are generally SS grade 316 Inner Race and Outer race, but the actual Cage that hold the balls are usually Pressed Steel and most definately the Balls inside the Cage are Chrome Steel.
Generally the Tolerances are less greater, and a Low Quality Ball Bearing,if it was Sealed or Shielded in some sort,it might have a chance...but only prolong the inevitable.... On 'High End' reels, they usually are SS316 all the way, maybe Shielded or Sealed, and generally a better standard of Ball Bearing. I really havent opened up the big $$ ones, but i think they have gone "Phenolic" with is a Porcelain Type Material,Graphite Impregnated, inpervious to all.Which actually uses the elements as lubrication. The reel quality is not the amount of BB's,but the general quality and design of the ones being used in this application. One of the places that i generally purchase better grade bearings from is : http://www.minibearings.com.au/contact/ Thery have all the sizes and style,in SS316. If any of the bearings in this reel fails,i will replace.Definately with a better Brand. Sealed,Sheilded,Flanged,Angular Contact you name it,these dudes do it. If you have a reel that not up to its best, fork out a bit of change and get new bearings...easy.

My family & I have a few Shakespeare Rods & Reels that are still going along strong. Just treat them right with just a little TLC using grease & oil + keeping them clean after use
There all still catching good sized fish when used as very reliable back ups.Good luck with yours Gae. Quote:

I dont reckon this is annoying at all. If people are annoyed by it then they shouldnt read it.
Its great you can give independant reviews about gear without being sponsored or affiliated with the items you are reviewing. Gives people a better insight into products they may wish to purchase in the near future. I wish I knew all that before I bought my deceiver last year, good information to know! Cheers mate |

Keep posting them mate, your opinion is just as valid as anyone elses here. Moreso, if I might take a stab in the dark, you're at least making an effort to post something useful and constructive.
My two cents.. those reels are excellent value for money. To the untrained eye it's just a shakespeare reel, to the train eye it's a pflueger medalist with a few changes ie: unsealed bearings and a cosmetic makeover.

Any surface rust on the body ? Using Soft Plastics and Hard Body's really punishes reels. Is the reel holding up and is it performing to your expectations ? Thanks.

There is no rust on any of the reel at all. There are a few dings in the reel handle from dropping it etc, but everything is still going well.
My expectations of the reel were quite low to begin with. For 10 ball bearings I was thinking it would be super smooth ( even though it was a shakespeare reel) and although its not very smooth, it is still a nice reel to use. Ive caught a few decent salmon on it that really put it through its paces, but as I have said, everything is still going well. Definitely a good choice if you are just getting into soft plastics or lures. Whether its better than a regal xia, well, I dont think so, but then again the regal is a bit more expensive ( unless the price has dropped). If I had to choose I would go daiwa in that price range still. |

As far as smoothing the reel out,i pulled the sucker apart, just a "Field Strip" and lightly oiled the gears and bearings...it has made a hell of a difference. Although contamination will be this reels undoing,so if i keep her clean,i reckon she will last and perform heaps better. I wont to hope so,as 2 x 10 year old Chinese Children died to make this reel !!!! Love the colour !

Just a small note.. I've played with a 25, a 30 and a 40. The 25 was a little clunky, the 30 and 40 were much smoother on the wind.
