Thanks mate.
I left the hook pointing down because I didn't want to add additional weight to the fly and without any additional weight it will sink point down. I haven't actually tested the sink rate in saltwater as yet, but my 5 wt fly line with the highest sink rate is 6 inches per second and I'm sure the fly will sink quicker than that.
Having the point down means that is will not be snag resistant, so I will run that risk. I have nearly always added a weed guard to my previous flies of this design, but on this one, I just forgot to include it.
I don't think I'd be able to make this fly with the hook riding up as the body material would block too much of the gape of the hook, but you've got me thinking about how I could do it.
