There's one foolproof way to get the backing perfect, but its a total pain in the bum.
Wind your braid on first then attach the backing and fill the spool. Wind it all off onto another reel or line spool, a nut, bolt and cordless drill can really speed things up. Then transfer it onto another spool before winding back onto the reel.
I have seen a mathematical formula to work it out somewhere, but I figure by the time you measure out the backing, you've got the job done using the method I described.
