Spooling

Hi all,

Been while since I've posted but need some help!
Spooling my reel and wondering do I need more backing or this will be fine?
Have a look in the picture, is the spool filled enough or not enough?

Thank you all in advanced

Bash

I've never tested just how much casting distance is reduced by having an under filled spool - but if you do choose to put more backing on - you should do a test to see how far you can cast in its current state - and then when respooled.

I like to take my line up to within 1mm of the spool lip.

Good idea mate!
Just might do that.

Nice reel!!! I'd top it up myself.

Yeah I can't stand to look at the spool like that, thought I'll get some feedback if it does it doesn't affect casting etc...

Looks like it needs a bit more backing

What you reckon now?

Had put 4lb for backing about 20 turns of the handle and changed it to 10lb with over 40 turns of the handle for backing. Still doing my head in and probably needs bit more backing...
I think it should be ok but!?

There's one foolproof way to get the backing perfect, but its a total pain in the bum.
Wind your braid on first then attach the backing and fill the spool. Wind it all off onto another reel or line spool, a nut, bolt and cordless drill can really speed things up. Then transfer it onto another spool before winding back onto the reel.
I have seen a mathematical formula to work it out somewhere, but I figure by the time you measure out the backing, you've got the job done using the method I described.

Could have gone a smidge closer to the spool lip - but I'd be ok with that

That's how I'm going to do by reels from now!
Thanks mate

Yeah I originally wrote "I'd be happy with that" then went back and edited it to "I'd be ok with that";)

Have always been more comfortable with a little less than too much. Have noticed that it has meant less chance of the dreaded tip wrap. Test it as it is and if not happy follow Green Hornet's advice. Regards HBt.
