I had a 40 Yama 2-stroke on 4.35m Hornet. Never a problem.

However was a dog to pull start in the morning.

Can't comment on a 30hp Suzy. Looks under powered to me on a 4.2 hull

Strange you say that Alex had a 25hp johno like that. Absolute dog to get going first thing but flawless all day after that.
As for a 30 on a 4.2? Had the DMH30 on my Dory n loved it. 3 cylinders of flawless grunt. Would start 2nd or 3rd pull from cold then first after that. Its that motor that helped sway me to another yamaha for my latest rig.

Had an 07 30hp two stroke suzuki on a 4.1 polycraft, it was under powered with any more than two people onboard. I have upgraded to a slightly older 3 cyl yammi and she scoots along now.

best solution to the hard cold starts is get the 40 2st yammy with electric start, pwr trim and tilt.
would probably be not far of the cost of the 4st either.
I also had a yammy 2st on my last boat. hard to start first up, but after it started for the first time, it would be barely 1/2 a pull on the cord every time after that. and never missed a beat.

I had that yammy on my 4.2 Explorer Trophy, pinged along and a great donk, but I would certainly look at a 40hp 4 stroke, no comparison on fuel and the ability to auto trim would be a god send. Certainly the upgrade i spent many an hour considering. Even the extra weight would have made my boat ride sweeter.

cheers

I've got a 3cyl Yammie 30 on my Stabicraft 389 Dinghy.
Now I know it says 389 on the sticker but overall it's 4.1m, and it's a plate hull full alloy RIB. I run the Yammie at 100:1 on Yamalube; standard prop; It can be finicky first thing in winter time.
Once it starts and has warmed up it's almost a half pull to get it going
The 30 pushes it to 26kts with me 105kgs, my wife (not saying :P), and two kids whom collectively weigh in at 50kgs; plus esky plus 30kg arkpak battery box.
I Love the motor. I may look at re-propping it later as I can't justify the dosh for a 4 stroke upgrade just yet.
If I did upgrade my hull is limited to a 40hp, so I'd be looking at a Suzuki 40 with trim tilt, etc
Double check your hull limitations. Do you have an electric motor ?
Maybe the money you save on the four stroke will buy you a high end electric bow mount [?]

Depends on how you intend to use the boat. If you will cover a lot of ground and have a passenger regularly than I'd get the 40 four stroke. If you won't cover much ground and will mainly do estuary and light offshore work by yourself than I'd go the Suzuki 30hp 2 stroke.

My Suzuki moves a 4.3 tinny at 20 knots and cost nearly $5k less than the 40 4 stroke. I mostly use the Minn Kota
