What is the thinnest braid
 

Alright I ask the same questions every single year, is there anything out on the market yet that matches berkley whiplash for its thin diametre? Whiplash 30lb is 0.10mm (i think), so unless it can match that then im not really interested (although im fishing 50lb next week) so yeah, I am always looking but can never find anything so any heads up would be great.

Sun Line Castaway PE, is about 20% thinner than Super PE..Don't know the exact diametre.. However it is very thin and would be worth looking at.

That's crazy thin for 30lb? Never heard of anything that thin in that rating before not even in top shelf pe lines. Will have to check it out :).

I'd take the whiplash diameter claims with a large grain of salt.

Theres no way whiplash is actually 0.10mm (thats less than PE0.4). They say they test it on lasers or something, but some quick checks suggest otherwise. If you do the calcs, it would be 17GPa, when dyneema is actually only 3.5MPa max (a figure consistent with top end thin jigging braids). If you search around a bit, berkley say that their 30lb is equiv to 8lb mono, but 8lb mono is around 0.22-0.25mm (PE2=0.235mm). So either berkley have managed to get DSM to make some super special dyneema thats 4 times stronger than any known dyneema fibre, or the diameter is actually closer to 0.23mm (ish). Hmmm :rolleyes:

Dont get me wrong, its pretty thin braid (up there with the thinnest jigging braids), but its not as thin as they claim. If it was, you'd be able to fit nearly 600m of it on a 2000 sized daiwa spool. 300m would be a pushover, so if anyone cant fit a 300m spool on that sized reel then you know the 0.10mm figure isnt accurate ;)



Richo: There are other lines out there of comparitive (actual) thickness, but whippy is pretty thin (and well priced), so if you're comfortable using that, then keep using that. If you want colour metered and smoother though...

Whiplash has been tested to break below its stated strain, thats why its so thin.

Whiplash is fairly thin for the rating it says on the pack. But i've found it doesn't break at that rating. I've had 30lb whiplash break at 20lb, straight out of the box, and not just in one batch, in a few different ones. It's also very rough. It's not to bad for the price though, but deffinitley not the thinnest or best braid available.

Sunline Castaway 50lb breaks at very close to 50lb and is an 8 strand braid so it's a hell of a lot smoother then whiplash. It's also extremely thin (pe3 I think).

Or if you feel like spending a bit more $$$ then you can always look at the Varvias Avani Max Power 10x (pe 3 48lb) or Daiwa Saltiga Sensor (pe 3 50lb).

awsome line, its on all my offshore reels. got 64lb on my saltiga and its so THIN.
