Hi all,

Here's the response to an email I (and quite a few of you) sent to W.A. Fisheries in February.

Dear David

Thank you for your email of 11 February regarding recreational and commercial net fishing in the Beaufort Inlet/Pallinup River system. I apologise for the delay in responding.

During the recent South Coast recreational fishing review, the South Coast Recreational Fishing Working Group considered future management options for recreational net fishing. In its advice to the Minister for Fisheries the Working Group recommended that all recreational netting be phased out on the South Coast over a 3-year period.

The Minister is currently considering both the Working Group’s recommendations and the Department’s advice. It is anticipated that the Minister will be announcing his decisions on the South Coast recreational fishing strategy shortly.

With respect to commercial fishing in the Beaufort Inlet, the Minister for Fisheries has previously advised the South Coast Licensed Fishermen’s Association (SCLFA) that any consideration to establishing a Voluntary Fisheries Adjustment Scheme for the South Coast Estuarine Fishery is dependent on the development of a package that provides, as an outcome, a material benefit to the recreational sector on the buyout of permits. To date, no response has been received from the SCLFA in regard to this issue.

Thank you for your interest in this matter.
