Hey guys
What is the reccommended rod length of a fly rod for bream fishing?
Is 9ft too long? I have little experience with fly fishing so any help is appreciated!:D

G'Day Kingpin,

Most fly rods are around 9ft, and I think it is a good size for bream work. All my rods are 9ft.

I wouldn't go much longer for bream because you usually don't need the extra casting distance.

A shorter rod is always useful for tight spots like under bridges, but I wouldn't get a short one straight away as they can be harder to cast.

Let me know if you have any other questions or come along to a Fly club meeting and try a few rods out.

Cheers,

Cole

hey dave

like Thurls is saying 9ft is the general rule of thumb a longer rod does make distances easier but flip side is handling a10 or 15ft rod in a small tinny in funny areas like under bridges and so on.

you can still cast a country mile with current equipment 9ft. But distance isnt everything.

Try the fly club as there is a large learning curve to the fly casting dynamics.

to be honest you won't really need to worry about the length of your fly rod....

not with other worries such as
...casting
...line tangles
...fine tippets
...working the fly correctly with your retrieve
...pulling that big fish out of the snags
...trees interrupting your back cast
...sharing waters with the neanderthals lobbing prawns and sinkers in your general direction
:D :D :D

enjoy the dark side...
