View Full Version : Loading/unloading canoes?
I am a bit new to this and have been toying with the idea of getting a canoe or kayak. The thing that worries me with a canoe is the loading & unloading from the top of my Navara. I had a look at a Coleman Scanoe & they looked huuuge! Would myself and say my girlfriend be able to load and offload one of them from the roof racks on my 4wd???
any comments pls?

Depends what the weight is. Maybe you can invent some litle roller that folds down on you rear roof rack ( it ake it thats what you carry it on) and just roll it up yourself.
It its just a trayback, then you should be fine.
yeh its a tray back. I just jumped on their website and it looks like the Pelican Navigator @ 25kg or the Colorado @ 37kg would suit me much better compared to the 55kg weight of the bayou 16/Scanoe. BTW I have just figured out that the Pelican's & Colemans are the same boat :)

try ARB or a bull bar roof rack shop mate they would be able to make some thing up for you
i have seen a set of wheels that go on one end of the yuk to help one person move them around

Gday Niz
depending on where you do most of your fishing but the coleman scanoe is a great boat.
It is very stable especially if your carring 2 pesons and they have plenty of room for gear.
I had the same problem when I was looking at buying, but im glad i bought the scanoe. It only wieghts around 40kg and two people should be able to handle it no probs.
On the loading and unloading if you have roof racks on your car then on the bull bar you make up a bracket a bit like a bike holder but exdend it up with a U shape up top level with your roof racks and place a roller between the U section then it can be easily rolled on and off.
I do have a pitcure of this some where I`ll try and find it and post it up.
For my canoe I modified a 4x6 trailer so my canoe sits up right on rollers so I am able to handle it an my own if need be.
Happy hunting

hey guys,
those who use canoes and want something to unload and load without breaking your back, there's a pulley device that you can buy that does the whole thing. Unfortunately the name has completely left me.
