I have been trying to test if my live well works, and cant seem to get it to fill with any water.

I turn the switch on and I can hear the pump running but nothing seems to fill, can I test it with boat out of water like from a bucket with a hose or something, or does it need to be while boat is in water.

In the below pics, one of these holes should be the water intake?

The pipe in the live well is only to drain..if I pull it out the water will drain, had to pull it out when I picked the boat up as there was still a little water in there..so it would appear it had worked.

Is there a trick to getting it to fill

The pump inlet in the first photo is on the right and drain on the left. You should be able to test it by putting the hose on the elbow that is sticking up but would only turn the hose on lightly.
Hope this helps.

The pickup is on the right.

The elbow should be faceing down when in operation on the water.

Some times you may get an air block in the pump. If this happens just pump your hand against the fitting as to force water up it and with the pump running and it should pick up and pump water.

You can test it with a hose running slowly but do NOT run the pump too long with it not pumping as you will over heat the pump and cause it damage.

Make sure that the tap (if fitted to the out let ) is turned on or open?

Hope that helps

Well,

I decided to take another look into the live well, as it having only one hole was confusing me a little, so got in there and stuck my head around a little and there was another pipe with a screw cork in it under the ledge

I suspect now it will work when out on the water.

Thanks for the replies all
