Hi,

I've always bought the cheaper polaroids from chemists or the cancer council and the difference between looking through water with them and non polarised sunnies is like chalk and cheese.

So that leads me to this question, what difference is there in the $200 + polaroids ?

I fished with Warren the other week, and had a go at his pair of Spotters photogramatics (sp??), awesome. I use polaroids costing about $100 and the differance was nothing short of bull$hit, $250 seems alot but I'm saving already for a pair.

Also I've rung a lot of optometrists near me and none of them stock them.

Do they have a web site ?

Thanks

All day Warren was there, can ya see that. With me straining and moving my head till I would finally see something, I put them on to see every contour, rock and change in sand colour, with fish moving through in 5 and 6ers. At one stage the floral boardied lure chucker got blown away by a bigboy, with the blackie scooting of with the gold 52 hanging out it's gob, it looked awesome with my crappy sunnies so it must of been a sight to behold with the spotters on. I think Madaf is the rep here in westoz I'm sure he'll tell you where you can gettem over east, if you ask.

You didn't need spotters Madfish, you got to see more fish on the end of your line than I saw in the water all day...LOL

We may be able to organise a supplier for you guys, bear with us for a few weeks.

I used to think the $250 price tag was excessive, until I fished that first session with them. The sand flats just glowed, and you could see every wash out, bombie, fish etc etc. I took them off to give them a clean after wearing them all day and couldn't believe the difference. The golden sand flats and all the detail disappeared. That's when I gave them to Madfish to try as I couldn't believe the difference they made.

Mind you, I trod on them while cleaning up the chalet on Sunday and smashed one of the lenses. :( :( :( :(

Off to the repair shop.

Warren.

ps. they were Spotters Photochromatic Gold.

Stepped on them ooooooooouch :( :(

Hi guys,

I was an optical dispenser for 14 years, so know a little bit about sunnies.

The main difference between the good quality sunnies and the el cheapos is that the expensive sunnies have an optically ground lens. What this means is that there is no distortion in the lens. The cheap sunnies do not have an optical quality lens and therefore create a lot of distortion. Some people notice the distortion, others dont. What does happen is that when the lens is distorted it causes you to squint through the lens, without even noticing. This in turn leads to eye strain, headaches, etc.

For me the choice is easy. Good sunnies are the way to go

Hope that helps

G'day bream people, go for Mako sunnies. Buy them from
www.campbellsprotackle.com for 50% off last time I checked that out. Excellent polaroids and pretty tough too.

Mim,

That was interesting what you wrote about distortion with my cheaper polaroids my wife feels sea sick almost straight away with them. She doesn't know how I can wear them.

Thats a GREAT reason for some spotters :D :D :D

Well, the mirror lenses are good for looking cool, also so that no-one can see your eyes. Thats about it, just a fashion thing. Different coloured lenses offer different types of clarity. Grey and blue lenses are known as true colour lenses as they do not distort colour. Yellow lenses distort colour, however, they offer higher definition, which is why a lot of guys like them for fishing.

My advice is that if you are purchasing any pair of good sunglasses ask the retailer if you can take them and try them outside, polaroids should be tried on the water. They cost a lot of money, and if you buy them and they don't perform the way you want them to then it is a lot of money to lose. A lot of places will let you take them and try them as long as you leave some sort of deposit.

Cheers

I bought a pair of Spotters photocromatics a couple months ago & I can not recommend them too highly. I had a mate out with me & he was wearing a pair of good quality polaroid type glasses & all day I was saying look theres a bream there see it theres a couple there go for it & he's going where I can't see a thing :D I'm not joking they are that good. I have Bolle's , Mako's & Carerras as well & none of them come close to the Spotters for seeing through water. Spend the $250 you won't regret it.

Father Christmas came to the party for me and delivered the Spotters photochromatic bronze. Absolutely fabulous. I've not worn glasses or only crappy ones before and its like chalk and cheese. I've been out before and guys have said "boy did you see that!!" and the answer was no. During the Albany bream comp Geoff Spads, my boater for the 2nd day, was actually giving me instructions as to when bream were near my lure simply because I didnt see them.

The worst I could say is that its taken me a while to adjust to the weight on my face (glass lenses) but even so I wouldnt do without them.

Craigs rating = 5/5.

Jim, I would part with my glasses for the view you have out your front door:)

The best you could say about mine is that I get a nice view of the front door over the road.

Cool

I hadn't heard of that before. It is always nice to learn something new.

I have been out of the industry for a few years now and when mirrors first came out it was more of a fashion thing. I am glad to know that the mirror does surve a purpose. I prefer an antireflection coating to a mirror tho. Cos I like to see peoples eyes and the anti reflection coating works really well

"The worst I could say is that its taken me a while to adjust to the weight on my face (glass lenses) but even so I wouldnt do without them."

Hmm are these spotters heavier than a pair of normal prescription specs? I've started wearing specs recently and haven't really noticed anything about the weight.

Torvic, the only difference is if you've had plastic lenses only b4. There is a difference in weight there, but I've been pretty impressed with the Spotters weight.

I've got the bronze penetrators as well and after smashing a lense and using elcheapo's again while they got repaired.

(back in my hands in under a week as good as new)

I now consider them to be my most important piece of tackle that must go every time I walk out the door.

I've got perscription lenses in Mako frames and the lenses came from OPSM at Rockingham City. They are the only people who supply prescription lenses like mine to the Navy at HMAS Stirling and these are specifically made for the navy, much darker and an excellent polarised lens. No manufacturer can come close to these. They cost a tad more, but gee they were worth it.

Hi Dale,

You will probably find that OPSM are contracted by the Navy to make all their prescription spectacles. You will also find that all the lenses they sell are available at any other optical dispenser, as OPSM get their lenses from the same manufacturers as everyone else. You can specify how dark you want your lenses and which colour you want to any Optical Dispenser. Again Polarising can be done through any Optical outlet.

It is just a matter of asking for what you want and if you are not happy let them know until they get it right. Australian standards will not allow any sunglass to be tinted above 90% as this then cuts out too much visible light. Most reasonable quality sunglass fram will take an optical prescription lens, however, if the frame has too much of a curve then it can be difficult to fit a lens into it as too much distortion is created in the lens.

Shop around and see who offers the best price and service

Cheers,

Mim

G'day Ms MiM, Thanks for that. I got my lenses donkeys years ago and I went for what they told me at the time. Do I smell a con?
But nun the less, these are an excellent lens and hopefully soon, I can get some laser treatment that will see me able to use some of the more stylish sunnies. But Mako's will be my first option I reckon.

Cheers

Thanks guys for steering me towards Spotters :)

I bought 'em yesterday and they are so awesome!

Looking into the water is like looking into a great big saltwater pond the detail is incredible.

I went to a surf shop and bought some of those wetsuit wrap thingo's that go around the back of your head and stop your sunnies from falling off, if you havent got them have a look at some cause they are only $4-00 and are great.

I have had so many el cheapo pairs of sunnies and finally I have a decent pair and I'm just sorry I waited so long to "see the light"
