I am facing a decision in the near future about the type of electric motor to put on my new boat. I have decided on getting a cable steer model but cannot choose which one. I have had a go driving the other type and didnt like how slow it was to respond. I realise that I am comparing a top of the line model to one that is at the bottom but was wondering what everybody else would choose. Value for money is important but so is its ability to perform the job over a long period of time. Is the Maxxum really worth spending the extra on (it is just about double to cost) and will it last any longer?

If anybody has either these motor any information would be much appreciated, good and bad.

Cheers,

Ryan

PS: I am looking at the 55lb models

Ryan,

I have just purchased a 67lb Motor guide "Brute" for my new 4.0 metre Quintrex Hornet. I am aware that this motor is not a salt water model, but was informed that if maintained properly, and if the centre shaft bearing was packed with grease, it would handle the salt. Many others have purchased this motor for salt and have not yet reported any problems.

I have had it in the salt four times in the past 10 days, and I am very happy with the performance (no sign of salt damage). I made sure I got an anode for the shaft, and hope that this helps.

The "Brute" is a cable steer 12/24 volt system with 5 speed settings. On speed setting 5 at 24 volts you have to hang on!!!The "brute" refers to the heavy duty frame/mounting bracket. I believe that it is the same mounting bracket as the Excel????

I have found that in strong current and wind conditions, speed setting 2 or 3 on 24 volts is fine with my boat.

At $999 (Brisbane) I couldn't justify buying a minkota, however I still could be proven wrong. It is still early days.

I hope this helps,

Dan.

How was the service where you got it?
