My mates 6lb fireline looks different, hard to explain but his looked more like ribbon, flatish and mine is more rounded. They were bought 6 months apart from the same retailer. Has anyone else noticed that?
*sidenote: his line seems tougher but stiffer

G'day Grant:D
Fireline 'wears' over time, the coating fluffs up a bit, you lose a bit of colour and it tends to have less 'memory' - could this be the difference:confused:
I've been using Fireline for more than 10 years and have found the same characteristics apply to all the stuff I've bought - I've even got a spool of (approx) 8 year old line that still does the job!
(Sounds like I'm talking about Scotch:p )
Hope this Helps,

I now have new green/yellow 6lb fireline on my reel and it feels so smooth it is naughty. New sliders, new line, new leader (8lb mono) mmmm

Hi there,
I use the 4lb in the fluro colour , got to be the best stuff in the world!! Its that slippery you have to wrap it around your hand a few times so you can pull the knots up tight!!!.
probally not the best stuff for a handline !!!!
cheers, steve

This time last year I was out one morning on a school of salmon in Broken bay & a guy in a boat near me hooked a salmon on what looked like 6 pound fireline & his reel blew up so he tried to handline it. It hurt watching :) He got the fish but needed a few band aids:D
Gday all
I also recently bought some Fireline and it would have to be the
best line possible to buy! :D :D :D
I can now cast my 1/16 oz jigs an awful lot further and
the other day I landed a 2 kilo Tailor on just 4 pound! WOW!

bought the 4lb a couple of days before the albany round and was commented how bright it was compared to a spool of the same stuff bought a few months before that.

I love it for the visability aspect too, but sometimes I think it may be too bright.
It's a shame they don't do a colour in between the smoke and hi-vis yellow, say a cream or pale blue - they should be able to, it's all chemicals after all. It would still be visable but maybe not as much to the fish.

is it worth changing 18 month old fireline if your entering a comp??
im currently using 6lb smoke but am thinking of 4lb fluoro. not sure if its worth upgrading because of the age factor.
thanks

Depends.... Have you lost a couple of fish for inexplicable reasons?? And.. would you have more confidence in new line??
Personally, I like Fireline that's a bit old - particularly for the 'memory' aspect I mentioned above, and I'll normally only swap to new stuff if I start to get a few unknown bust offs, that wouldn't be good in a comp though:(
Don't forget that you can swap Fireline end-to-end on your spool, giving the least used bit a workout. It's amazing how short a length of line actually gets regular use, you may find the stuff deeper on the spool is nearly new;)

I wouldn't change it because of age alone. If its a bit suspect do like Dave says & end for end it. Its really only the end 10 or 15 metres that gets a hiding.

This happened to me too, its just normal, it happens to everyone.
I founds that the faded stuff creates mor tangles, but thats just the way it is.
