Im thinking of servicing my Epix20 myself for the first time, it copped a hammering down in Walpole especially from Salt spray. Dave I know you have one, have you serviced it yourself yet. Any drama`s..... I mainly don`t want to come up with extra parts when its back together...? I probably will. Advice from anyone would be muchly appreciated...
cheers

Mate honestly, when the local tacklo only charges $20 to service them, I'll admit to not having done my own for a while:D
I haven't had the Epix done, but I figure with a 5 year warranty, I can afford a bit of neglect:D (slack? yes I know:rolleyes: )
When I use to do them, I did something similar to what mike suggested, cleaning all parts in turps, and assembling with just enough grease/oil to do the job - too much hurts almost as much as too little;)
Helps if you've still got the schematic diagram too, for when it's almost reassembled and there's that one 'thingamajig' you forgot to put back:D

After the old "Drop your $500 combo in the drink" incident, I had to rebuild my Banax.
Now I know that it has recently died on me, but I am sure if we get togethor we can service your reel. My Banax had a lot of tiny parts and I am proud to say that it all went back togethor without any spare bits left over.

Cheers guys,
We'll have a look at it Geoff, and see what we can do, but if I can find a shop to do it for $20 or less. I`ll consider that as well. I need it to run smooth again.
How did you go at Madurah today??, much action?
cheers

Richo,
Honestly there isn't a whole lot inside an Epix 20, I got mine last week and as a confirmed bona fide "fiddler" had it apart within an hour "just to see how it worked".
Buy some reel grease from a tackle shop and use it very sparingly, usually though there is enough inside the reel to get on your finger and wipe the main cog.
There is not a lot of servicable parts inside as there sealed bearings, the main one to keep moving is the line roller and this is just a single screw just becareful of the washer (part 317) in there when you take the screw out, just make sure you see what side its on.
Have a go yourself its a lot simpler than an overhead or little baitcaster and its another aspect of the hobby and something for those bad weather days:)

Cheers Jim,
I might just have to do that. Dosn`t sound to difficult at all...But it`ll be a 40 degree day in the AirCon I reckon.
thanks

Richo,
That is a bad weather day for me 40 degrees the a/c on and fiddling with "fishy" things.
A good weather day for me is overcast, cool even light rain I don't care, I just can't hack the sun like I did in my youth surfing all day.
I hate bloody el Nino's
Might have something to do with getting so many skin spots burnt off every 6 months:confused:

I got there around 2pm and surprisingly didn't go up too far to nail that one, I could see the red bus.
Here is a pic of it

i'd rather pay $20 for a reel service than turn up to my lts with a box of bits
richo....any parts left over just makes the reel lighter :D :D :D

How do you get 'em to sit so still and quiet while you take their pic, do you whisper in their ear ?
Mine never seem to do that.
yeah there are some good snags around of the red bus!!!! infact most of my fish have come between the red bus and the ramp- im assuming you launched at the bend
read my post in WA hotspots
who were you with???

I was all on my lonesome and that fish was not sitting very still for long, it was one of the times that it stayed still that I snapped off a couple.

I recently went expensive! (mind you it was expensive for me!)I got a Okuma Epix eb20 and wanted to know should I put that water proof spray on it? it tell's you to do that in the maintenance booklet. (then again it could just be there for the purpose of coning someone in to buying some water proof sray from them!!!) Ha!! :o  ;)

Hi,
I will have a go at most reels and haven't had any major dramas. One trick I used was to enlarge the schematic on a photocopier to the biggest size possible. Just makes it a bit easier to read, you can slip it in a plastic sleeve in a folder and have it looking at you when you try and find where the extra bit goes. Just a thought.
Regards
Hey. I serviced my reel a couple of days ago. It is really easy after one or two times. I would recomend it for sure. What happens if your down at a comp and your reels needs a service and no shops are open?
Always worth at least having a look at the internals of the reel to see how it works!

KingPin,
If the reel DohDohDohDoh its self during a comp, unrucky as I believe you should have them all done before hand, than nobdy to blame but yourself.... sounds like you did a good job on yours mate....

Hi All
i was talking to a mechanic when repairing the trailer he said what type of grease i had prevously packed the bearings. He went on the say of there was a difference in grease the two types of grease can react with each other and produce a chemical reaction of sorts (all depending on the types of grease).
So that translates to using the same materials when i grease the reels. I have all ways used a metho bath then dry them then repack/lightly lubricate with sewing oil (very fine). Now i am going to buy the grease and leave it (witha note on it) just for fishing reels.
i think it hasnt been said but if you grease the drag system you are actually working against the design of the reel. Drag systems dont need a lubricant they need something like the peen reel oil grease a fine graphite for drag systems.
Cheers

Hey guys
I've got an Okuma EFS20 too, its still running smooth and with the anti-reverse off its perfect. Only funny thing is, with antireverse ON there is this little resistance you can kind of feel and hear in a quiet room. Its still smooth and when your outdoors fishing you wont notice it...but does anyone know why this would be? In particular, what part of the internals of the reel would need special attention?
