Can anyone help me get into the world of flyfishing. i really like the idea of making flies and then chasing fish on them, but before i make my own i pretty much have to learn all the basics except how to cast. i was shown personally at the fishing expo in sydney by some flyfishing guru.
What type of weight rod and line will i need if i want to chase bream flatties whiting etc.
what brands do i have to look for and are there combos that i can buy because it would make things easier.
finally i dont want to spent to much because im not sure if im going to like it and i dont have a job (mum wants me consentratring on school) so info will be great thanks:D
i am pretty sure u want a 5-7 weight rod with a intermediate line to match ur rod witha a straight 8lb flurocarbon leader, good rods to start with a innovaters, redington and a bit up the price range g-loomis and sage, as for reels a combo 6/9 are good which are large arbour. flies such as murry wilson's bms and all those sorta hammerhead and other patterns work well, and for flathead and other salt water fish a white clouser is never looked past
i hope this helps
cheers greg

mr nofish you'd be lookin at 200-300 for a cheap outfit. if you want to just get a set up to see if you like it and do some light fishing probly get one of those packs with everything in it. you'd be lookin at about 5 weight for bream and flatties you could go higher but the only reason i would is to combat the wind
cheers ben
ok
basic prices
for an innovater or redington start at $250
fly reel$60 and upwards
line well u have 2 options, a floting line with a quick sink poly leader-$60 for line plus $20 for leader
or an intermediate line $130
backing is only about 10 bucks or so
and u should allready have some flruocarbon
so ur looking at $400 or so, i have my old fly rod for sale in the classifieds, if ur interested
cheers greg

Hey Mr nofish
Have a look here (go to bottom of page)
Flyfishing pack (http://www.jmgillies.com.au/prods/P16/index.html)
These are some packs that JM gillies have put together and they comprise of a rod, reel, line and backing and would be pretty good for what your looking for. Im not sure how much they cost but i think that they shouldnt be anymore than $250.

Mr no fish im pretty sure that those flyfishing packs are sold anywhere that plano stuff is sold as the are both sold to the tackleshops by the same wholesaler (JM gillies) if you local shop sell plano then they should be able to order one of those combos in for you if you ask them.
I'd stay away from the rexhunt combos as they are very basic and lack performance, the rod is made of fiberglass and is not as resopnsive as the graphite equivlent.
As with all things you get what you pay for.

If your in Perth then check out this shop it's in Bayswater just across the road from the train station. Otherwise you can order via the web site. I've been in there and the guy who runs it is really helpfull.

If you live in nsw big w have a complete shakespear outfit for about 90 bucks.
It isn't the greatest but it does work ok.
You get the lot even some flies.

Its an expensive business to get into unfortunately.
It would be best to start with one of the packs available, to keep you initial expenditure down. You have extras and consumables, flies, leaders, tippets, floatant, vest, fly boxes, yada yada yada..That can push the cost up very, very fast.
I must say though, it is quite seriously the absolute biscuits when you start catching fish on flies, especially with a decent rod.
There is just something about it, even better when sight fishing...Better still, sight fishing with a fly you tied yourself..
Awesome sport. Get into it.
Just takes practice, perseverance, patience and time.

$250 for a fly outfit is really cheap! The top end of stuff you're looking at more than $1000 just for the rod alone and large arbour (mag wheels type) top end reels like Loop or Bauer or Waterworks (dream...) will set you back $600 easy.
The main purpose for the reel inmost cases is to hold line unless you're after hard running pelagics so if you're going to cut down on somehting, cut down on the reel. The rod and especially the fly line I'd get the best I can afford. You can get really good outfits at much less than their original price by looking at Classifieds and the Trading post. Like cars, they lose much of their firsthand value the moment they leave the store....
In second hand cases better to get it in your town so you can look at it, inspect it and try it before buying it. I'd say that's a better option than buying a new outfit for $250.
Casting... I learnt a lot of my casting from videos believe it or not... The few that I use to great effect is the one by lefty Kreh and other US ones. The British ones tend to cover trout fishing predominantly... Practise.. practise.. practise.. but it helps A LOT to have someone who knows how to cast next to you to show you a few tips..

somepoeple might hate me for this but i really prefer to fish for trout on fly. mainly because of the thrill of sight casting to a fish, tempting it to strike... :) but i usually only get to do it once a year so...:p ;) but i fish for bream and flatties heaps as well since thats on my doorstep
