View Full Version : Favourite Hard Body

The use of Hard Bodied lures for Bream has been somewhat overshadowed of late by the Soft Plastics craze, but there are definately some situations where the use of a minnow is a must. My personal collection has really dwindled over the last year. Tackle store visits involve restocking plastic and jig heads but I cant remember the last time I purchased a new minnow meaning that losses aren't being made good.
I have decided it is time to restock the Hard Bodied area of my "FTSR" (fishing tacle storage room) and to that end I would like to know what are everybodies favourite's?
Personally I love the Attacks, specifically in Purple and Rainbow Trout:D

G`Day Matt,

Very Interesting question - at this stage Id have to say the sneaky scorpion in the CrawFish, as it has claimed my last 2 decent fish. But since Albany Ive developed a soft spot for the sinking Gold n Orange back scorpion (which got my fish in Albany) and the OarG ripper in JG (looks dynamite in the water), and also my collection is on the rise with 2 more added this week.

I was someone who totally wrote them off previously but now can`t get enough of them. And like yourself gotta add another box to store them. I reckon my mind will no doubt change the more I use them, I know bear and some of the guys reckon the Attacks are super... just gotta keep chucking them.

Cheers

Richo:p

Yo Zuri Snap Shad in gold/black back. Awesome little lure! :D

By the way, WA guys - Campbell's has a huge box of snap shads @ $9.95 each until they run out. I suggest grab a few because Yo Zuris aren't going to be brought in to Aus any more...

Maybe that's a grab for Warren. Breammaster Yo Zuris :-)

I still find it hard to go past the Attack in Breammaster gold in deeper water. In shallow water I go with Chris, grab a Yo Zuri. I like the Our Gee in Gold as well.

Favorite hardbody of all time.....

I'd have to say the old style Bennet/McGraph(sp) in red with the black tail spot - I've still got a few but they don't get much of a swim anymore, I don't want to loose them.

I like the Rebel Wee Frog and Crickhopper in summer - you think Bass have explosive surface takes, wait till you get your first Bream:eek:

I've got a ton of different small hard bodies that I use for Bream - the last time I used any of them I just kept working my way through them to see what worked, that's the reason we need soooo many:D

Cheers,

There is no doubt about it that Oar-Gees are my favourite.

I pre-fished with Matt Fraser at Taree for the B.R.E.A.M. Grand Final, and if we weren't fishing Atomic Craws in the snags, we were fishing the racks with Oar-Gees in colours JG (my favourite) or BR, which Matt found out to be a fairly desirable colour for the bream.

I fished a few different hardbodies when pre-fishing, and another lure close to my heart was the Teeny Wee Craw in the Stream Crawfish colour (twc 60). I found that this fished better when the water was clear.

Although we found lure colour and type to be very important, long casts when fishing in clear water was a necessity.

The attacks and oargees have also worked well for me but if you are after a hard body that works over racks then the smilin jack raw prawn is not a bad budget option but remember to remove the bottom hook.:

Heya all,
For my two bits worth i'd have to say my fav. hardbody for bream is........ 5cm "floating Rapala Original".The colour is orange. Still have one in my tackle box but I'm scared to use it for fear of losing it.
These lures are pretty hard to find so if you see one grab it.
Caught my first bream on one of these about 15 years ago totally by accident and have pretty much used them all the time since.
anyway ,
cheers,
Kris

The old Rapala hey, its amazing that the original Rapala F5 Minnow is still the benchmark by which most hard bodied minnows are judged. I have not purchased a new one in many years but still have quite a few older ones that I run occasionally. In fact the orange one you mentioned Kris we used to modify by painting red/brown dots on them so they represented Brown Trout for use in the Alpine Lakes, these modified Rapala's caught more than a few Bream aswell.

Good question Matt,
Although I have done pretty well on Attacks, especially the Fire-Tiger pattern,I would have to rate the Rebel Crawdad in the medium size as my favourite. My colour choice is brown back with orange underside.
Most of my bigger Bream caught on hardbodies have taken this lure.
When I take a beginner bream spinning with h/b's,it's the lure I get them to use.A mate of mine ,second time ever Bream spinning, pulled a 46cm horse from the Hawksbury oyster racks while we were doing a recon for the September S/fish Bream comp.
IMO,the high pitched rattle is a real bream magnet in discoloured water. You do need to change the hooks on these lures though.

Apart from attacks, scorpions, orgees and crawdads that have been mentioned I've had heeps of luck with the small cottoncordel
Big O in the green perch patern. In fact my missus got a ripper in the Clyde on it . About 1.4kgs and I'm still hear'n about it
10 months later.

My favourite crankbait is the Taylor made Little nugget. A small lure that dives quick and comes up just as quick. Attacks, scorpions just dont dive quick enough for my purposes. The oargee stable have a few good crankbaits as well.

Yeh; RossL, I have used the Cotton Cordell in the two smallest sizes and they have taken some nice Bream.Did you mean the smallest or the next size up ,the small one has no rattle, not that that matters,I'm just trying to ID which one you meant.
Another hot little Bream lure is the Bomber Little Fat A, a bit hard to cast far ,but deadly in the right situation. It has a really small profile with high pitched rattle.
I've been looking around for one, but they are seldom seen unfortunately.

Lil' Ripper JG and PF, followed by Predatek Minmin in black. The Rippers cast well and have a top action. For me, the JG is one of the few hardbodies that consistently gets whiting. Have noticed, however, that the bibs on the Rippers can work loose, and sometimes need a drop of superglue .

I have to agree with sx-40's, attacks but at the moment the shallow running jackall chubby is is cleaning up on our east coast bream

10-03-2006, 04:06 AM
yeop........ the sx 40's are hard to go past and hard not to get blown away by the price. most of my recent bream have come from the sx40's. reds are good and so is the silver and gold one

although the attack minnows are great along with the sneaky scorps

Yeh I originally dredged this post out of the archives to show support for a new member who was being hassled for answering old posts. :D

I have very limited experience with Hb's other than strike pro's and ecogears. I used to use scorpians but there was one pivotal day when I was shown the power of ecogears. After that - never went back.

Hey guys, what does 'shirasu' mean? :) I've seen it on a couple of Japanese products (namely Ecogear- Shirasu Head).
I'm stumped

I need to get my digi cam working. I just had a fiddle around with a strike pro pygmy and converted it into a true popper. It works a treat in the bath tub! Im keen to get out and give it ago on the Bream now.

Big Breams don't grow to their size for nothing. They are experienced, intelligent and well exposed to most of the hb used. Why don't just get something everybody is not recommending? The "new" look may arose their curiosity which is their main weakness. Have fun hunting for the HB which you think can fool the old and cunning......Just trying to think out of the box. It's just another theory of using lures.

12-03-2006, 01:35 AM
Couldn't agree more, interestingly enough I'm flogging a few off in classifieds at the moment.
It's funny because the first ones to go were the vibes but everyone has completely missed the best lure.
Suspending Shad or Minnow or Vibe, dont be so sure! try out some different types of lures for Bream.
It's like Penguin said they soon smarten up to the same lures.
Regards Mad Shad.
P.S Bass Pros in the U.S.A spend up to $5000 US on lures alone. Always have an arsenal of weapons and have that secret weapon just in case.

Hi Mad Shad,
After posting my suggestion, I thought I would be bombarded by a lot of disagreement. Am therefor is surprised that you agreed with me.
You know I was told once by a fisho, when you are after a quenie, you have to cast a few times and try to get them straight away otherwise keep changing the fly after a few cast. When you exposed the same fly for too long, if they don't strike ,then they will ignored it totally. That illustrate how smart a fish is - contrally to most thought that they are stupid. It's just hunger or anger or the curiosity sometimes made them look stupid!
The moral of the story is there is no best HB. You need an arsenal of them to use at different place at different time with different way to outsmart the fish.

I tested out my home made popper tonight and its off its tree (no fish though). The action was right and it blopped perfectly. I just have to play around with the balance a little more and it should be perfect.

After fishing today I would have to say I'm definatly a convert to the sx40's. Up until now I mostly used Strike Pro's but after catching more bream than I ever have in a single session on an sx40 colour 306, I can certainly see why they demand the extra price. Lost count of how many I caught today but I reckon would have been 35+ with the biggest going 35cms. Got about 5 fish between 30 - 35cms and about 10 - 12 undersize but when your catching fish every 10 - 15 mins it's all good fun.
The only bad thing to say about the Ecogear's is that the colour scheme chips quite easily as after one day's use it already has a few battle scars.

I used a Jackall Tiny Fry 50 for the first time today and was very impressed to say the least. My tip is this expensive Jap lure is going to do very well on the Australian market!
