Wind knots

Has any of you anglers experienced wind knots for the want of a better word when using 4lb fireline, a loop of line appears after a cast and it seems as if a loop has slipped off the spool a long way down. Failure to notice this b4 your next cast causes major untangling probs:mad: i have found using larger lures and jigs helping with this problem, maybe not winding the belly in the line on tight enuff is my cause, what say you all?:confused:

I think the method of retrieving the lure by pulling with the rod, then recovering the slack with the reel is the main cause of these probs. Fireline needs to be wound on under some tension or it is prone to "throwing loops" as you have found. It is easy enough to prevent if you cast out hard every twenty casts or so to get lots of line out and retrieve it through your fingers to put some tension back on the line.

i agree with pw bream that happens most days i go fishing and it is because of the rod tip pulling the lure and taking up the slack with the reel every now and then i throw the lure out as far as i can and just retrieve under the pressure of the lure.

Diesel, you're not the only guy to have this nasty problem by a long way.

Have a look at the "Reels" forum and there is a post on about the second page titled "Reel Throwing Loops". Quite a lengthy discussion of the problem and some likely causes and solutions.

At leat this is one of the easier and more sensible forums around.
Some of the fishing ones are very difficult to get a long with, esp behind a firewall.
The site here is simple and has a clean interface that loads quick, some are so overburdened by images and ads that they lose their reason for being there.

A common problem for most you`ll find diesal, and it all comes down to winding it back on tightly or, throwing a long cast out and cranking it in every 5-10 casts (happens more with softs than hards unless real windy of course), but a pain to spend 20mins taking a loop out, an absolute nightmare.

As you said you can see them coming sometimes, so throw them out and fix it straight away. Remember one thing that I have learnt the hard way, and thats once the loop has been thrown, to only pull the main line off the reel, not all 3 or you have the biggest nest in the world (Unfixable), grab the right line and the loop wont twist or get bigger, just hopefully it wasn`t to deep - and it`ll be out quickly.

A fair bit of waffle mate - but Im sure you get the drift, I bet ya don`t get these loops chasing big snapper off of rocks mate.....

I use a Stella 2500 it had the same problem until I reduced the level on the spool, around 3mm below the spool lip, this hasn't reduced the casting distance and I rarely get loops.
Another trick that may help.
When you cast, at the point of release the rod tip is not pointing at the intended target, try doing a follow thru that ends with the rod tip pointing at the lure, controling the line leaving the spool with your non-casting hand, when the lure is a few feet above the landing site stop line leaving the reel and close the bail arm manually, now before winding the handle stroke the line up from the reel to remove any slack line and move the rod to the retieve position, usually 90 degrees.
I know this sounds complicated but quicklt becomes second nature, most of your problems should disappear.

I reckon 90% of "wind knots" come from when you cast and you click the bail arm over and the very first coil that you put back on is not tight.

Bushy describes the best way to pull them off your reel in his and Starlo's book, it works everytime:)

Thanks for that Richo and Co i had the mainline stripping sussed and now can relate to the problem, As far as snapper go Richo big baits and livies are not conducive to wind knots even on the overheads:D

I reckon thats very close to the mark myself. A quick glance at the reel can save a lot of dramas later.

Just make sure the line is tight when you first crank the handle after each cast. I find i have no problems this way. If you point the rod at the lure when you cast, all you do is swing the rod back 90degrees, as Steve said. Although this isn't effective in windy conditions.
With wind, just use your hand to keep it tight, BEFORE YOUR FIRST CRANK OF THE HANDLE!
That is pretty much all thats to it!:D
