Why are you asking such silly questions we all know there is only one type of line to use!! ;) ;)
Seriously though fireline is best and $25 is well worth the investment. Thats what everyone here uses and really...fishing isnt quite fishing without fireline.

you forgot to mention the need for a stronger mono leader. you need it for the snags and pylons. i usually use the a leader the same length as the rod, could go as little as 60cm i guess

Yea oops the leader is a must. For lure fishing just tie the leader directly onto the fireline (!), I would recommend the double uni knot for starters, then you can learn the more advanced knots

I started SP fishing with mono, It didn't take long to realise my mistake and re spool with fireline, there is a huge difference in casting distance! The further you can cast, the more water you cover, or the further you can stay away from the snags and not spook the fish!

In the areas I have been fishing the issue of casting distance hasn't been a factor, but I think that the extra sensitivity provided by the Fireline was probably instrumental in securing a good hookup on my first soft plastic caught bream this morning.
Gday
I think everyone uses 4 and 6 pound fireline. I go for the 4 in fluro green.

Umm I dont think the colour effects casting distance at all. Unless the ink they use for smoke or flouro has different frictional properties.
Personally I think smoke looks good on the reel, but flouro looks cool in the water :p

Yeah but Fire-line has it's gods and bads. like every set of rules has it do's and dont's. :p ;)
You might want to put a mono backing on before you spool up the fireline, this way you dont use quite as much of the fireline. After 3-6 months of use remove the fireline by winding it onto a spare spool, then reverse it. You will get twice the use out of it.
Cheers
