Spooling up with Fireline

G'day guys

Got my lady her new Okuma Metaloid yesterday, and raced home to load up some 4lb smoke coloured Fireline. Took a while to work out how much mono to put under the Fireline first.

I've been left with what looks to be about 4mm on each side under the lip of the reel. Looks like I'll have to take it off again and put more mono on.

Is there a way to judge this a bit better?

Someone posted a brilliant idea a week or so ago.

Spool the fireline onto your spare spool, then tie on your intended mono backing line and continue to spool up till
the reel is as full as you want.

Spool up a spare reel of any type with the line you just put
on the spare spool (it is now backwards with the mono on top).

Fit the main spool of the new reel in place of the now empty
spare spool and spool the line from the spare reel onto the
new reel and its main spool.

Hey presto, Fireline back on top with exactly the right amount
of mono backing underneath.

Yeah i agree. That idea is great. It makes it all so simple!!!:D

Had to overspool my spare one to get around the right length of mono with the original. Btw I seemt o remember reading somewhere you should spool it up until the line is around 1/8th of an inch from the lip, is this right?

However I didnt get a spare spool with my reel so I just do around 20 winds with the mono.

Funnily enough, my Okuma didn't come with a spare spool, and I wouldn't have even known I was missing out until I read this thread.

I've since checked, and yes I should have got a spare spool and protective cover as well. There was nothing else in the box with the reel. I contacted the retailer and they apologised and will have a replacement here by week's end. Very nice. :D

So, thanks for pricking my curiousity. :) Until then, I am spare spoolless :) and tried using the spare spool off my Daiwa Laguna, but it seems to be about half the size of the Okuma spool ...so no good until the spare arrives later.

I know what to do when it arrives though. Thanks guys.

For the first time in months, literally, we are confined to indoors today because of rain. Lovely rain.

The rain is superb, even though it ruined the cricket while we were in the healthy position of 1-120. Might be worth wetting a line now as the rain should have stirred things up a little.

Where in Brisbane did you get the Metaloid from Kevin? And did you get a decent deal on it?

Hey

You dont really need a spare spool or reel.

Put on as much fireline as you want, then fill the reel with mono.

Then just go down to the local footy field or any large space and pull the line off (youll need a helper) and the wind it back on from the opposite end. This is all I generally do

:-) I remember reversing the mono on my reels by unspooling it down the street tied to a telephone pole when I used to live in Bairnsdale, lucky no-one wanted to go in or out of their driveway at the time.

A comment on the Daiwa Laguna spools; they are very shallow, and my 1500 was almost completely filled by the 125M Fireline, it took only a short length of 7 pound Water Queen mono as backing. The spare and main spools on the Laguna are both aluminium and both the same capacity, nice feature of a nice reel.

I gave a slight mis-direction in my recounting of the method of getting the right amount of backing too. You don't need a second reel, the Fireline first, mono to fill on the spare spool is correct. Then you just put the spare spool on the bench/floor and spool that lot directly onto the main spool. That way the mono is under the Fireline and everything is happy ever after.
