Ok, guys, things are getting serious.

Recently, I took my lovely wife and son out camping and fishing for the weekend at Lake Moogerah. Some of you may have seen the nice haul of Australian Bass we got.

Anyway, after fishing very well (both of them) for the weekend I grudgingly admitted that their tackle needs serious looking at. I must admit they were both using crap, and my old crap at that!

So, here's the serious part. I need/want to upgrade their tackle but I don't want to spend a fortune. Let's face it, they deserve good gear but one only fishes every six months, and the other more frequently but only for an hour and then she's bored! :)

So, limiting myself to a budget of no more than $200 each for a set of rod & reel, what can you recommend?

I could match a nice Okuma EFS 20 and nice rod but that only leaves me about $80 to spend on the rod. There seems to be a great gap between good reel at $120 and crap at $80.

Anyway - thoughts greatly appreciated.

At that sort of usage I would be looking seriously at the Okuma FA30 end of the scale. At around $50 to $70 they are great value for money. Gives you a bit more to spend on the rod.

Later on down the track, you can always upgrade the reel.

HTH.

Take a look at Shakesperes Catera and Synergy Range. You might be surprised by the quality of this gear!

Is the FA30 the Avenger model, Bear?

Hi Dave

I'm not discounting any brand at this stage. In fact, I like the look of the Shakespeare Intrepid Titanium graphite rods.

Or match the Epix to an..... Epix (rod that is;) )

Saw a great combo of the two, just over your budget but well worth it.

They were also offering the Okuma 'California' reel (very nice, but not quite an Epix) with one of the Epix Light Spin rods for $199.

If you're interested let me know as this store is the only one in Aus that will be stocking the 'California'

My other suggestion would be an Avenger 20 matched with a Diawa Procaster-X, should come in around the $200 mark.
