I generally use a rod length of leader depending on where I'm fishing........
Over shallow clear stuff I'll go lighter (4lb) and longer and in murky water heavier and shorter.
One exception is fishing really tight structure such as oyster racks - I go fair bit shorter, just takes out that extra bit of stretch that could give a good Bream a chance to smoke you :)

In open water I use about a rod length and a half, that way there's a bit of stretch. In tight country I'll use as short as 40cm to minimise the line stretch.
Depending on your knot size it may not be wise to use much more than a rod length of leader as you'll be casting the know off the spool and this can caused problems. :(

for most all-round lure casting i usually have the trace long enough to just come off the spool. that way theirs no worries with the cast.

plus i find it a good length on most rods

I usually use a leader of around 2 meters, this gives you a good distance between your fireline and softy.
It also means you don't have to retie a new leader regualrly if you are continually changing plastic's or your fishing a little light and getting busted off at times.

I use about 1.5 m of either 6 or 8 lbs Vanish.

I find that when I am snagged, that the leader knot join snaps, so the shorter the leader that you can get away with the better (to minimise leader loss).

It shouldn't snap there if the knot is tied correctly, the knot joining your jighead should be the weaker knot. I snagged up and busted off my jighead about 10 times the other night, I didn't have to re-tie leader once.

Are you using a double in you leader connection? It helps alot to prevent leader knot failure.

I don't use a double, I just tie them together with an improved albright and cut the tags as close as possible.
How do you tie that swoffa

Here's a pic that Chris posted a while ago, I tie it slightly differently as I wrap the line in both direction but couldn't be bothered to draw a new diagram.

Looks like a no-name knot thats just wound downwards instead upwards....?
I think i will stick to the uni knot i have never had a problem with it so far.

I tie it the same as in the above diagram, and it tends to break at the leader/ mainline knot, rather than at the jighead?! You must have some sort of secret Swoffa?

ive got anoyher way of tying the knot 1- make a loop in leader pass fline through wind it up 10 times and then wind it 10 times back over itself then pass tag end back through the loop and pull tight easy quick and has never broken on me and never sliped

That's how I tie it too, with a few less turns. Works for me.
