bream on home made lures

Just wondering whether any of you out there have caught a bream on a home made lure????
I haven't yet caught a fish on any of my lures but tonight my dad got i small bass on one of lures :D

I have not tried making lures yet but how do you shape them as I want to give it a go and what kind of mateiral do you use.

I use both pine and maple, maybe not the best but woods for the job but thats whats on hand. Not the best because they are both very bouyant timber meaning they rise quickly from a depth.

As for carving i cut the basic shape out with a scroll saw then i carve the timber with a sharp knife must be careful.

The whole lure making process takes time to get it right but practice does make prefect sort of:( :D

I've had some luck with home made poppers on Bream.

Get yourself some of those soft, rubber foam ear plugs, heat a needle up and melt a hole through the middle, thread your line through and attach a treble hook (treble goes on the skinnier end) - how easy is that:)

I've found the Orange ones work best;) You can paint them if you like, and trim them - just experiment.

They make a nice 'bloop' when you drag them across the surface.

Realy do bream take unwheighted ear plugs. Is it easy to cast them? Thanks breamobasser for your reply to I' ll try that.

They certainly do take them:D

It's not that hard to cast them on the regular Bream gear, I reckon they'd weigh about the same or a bit less than a 1/32 Oz jighead.

Once you've had your first surface Bream you'll be hanging out for the sounds of Cicada's - that's the best time to get them;)

Has any one here seen the kits you can buy.

I've heard that they are around $75, would be curious to see how they go.

I bought one a couple of years ago and didn't end up using the whole lot - it was fairly time intensive (but fairly easy to use) and I didn't really put the effort in that was nessessary.

There was a bit of trial and error with the bouyancy 'microspheres' to get the sink rate right, and bib attatchment was a bit difficult to get dead straight, but otherwise pretty good.

I'd give them another go now - especially since I've got a design I want to test out, watch this space:D

I was thinking along similar lines Dave. I also want to play a bit with colours, instead of spending $10-15 on a lure and trying to destroy it.

Seriously though Dave, that is a very clever idea, better than punching plugs out of thongs.

I reckon they would work a treat on the Hopkins River down in Warnambool on a Summer evening. There are Bream and Estuary
Perch in there that respond to surface lures.

I'm about to buy some balsa wood and pine and make my own Lures. I'm gonna build oargee replica's as their bibs are so basic.
I'm got 7 more weeks of sitting on my arse due to my leg, so i might aswell give it a go!:D
