Breamboy,
Take some time out to browse the posts about rods, reels, lines etc and you might get some more ideas.
What's your price range for the rod and reel combo? If you're new to the game (or even not) then I'd start off by grabbing:
(everything apart from the reel can be purchased from Warren online)
Penn Pinpoint IM6 6' light spin 2-4kg line class rod($149)
Okuma Avenger 15 reel ($70-80) (great reel for the price, I've got one)
Berkley Fireline - 125yd Smoke or Green (it's up to you) 4lb/2kg ($27.95)
Penn Powerline leader - 300m Clear 8lb ($13.95)
The rod and the reel is a reasonably cheap but very good quality outfit to get out and at 'em, you certainly don't need to go and spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars.
Then wak it all together, throw on a few lures, track down some breamskies, snap some photos and post them on here!
Now that's just my opinion and there are a lot of options out there at the moment so have a look around and see what you like the best.

Dont forget to leave some money for the bits and pieces of plastic they call lures!
I spent almost 2 weeks of hard labour turning our jungle back into a garden again. Now I'm stuck with 1 packet of sliders, 6 jigheads and negative ~ $50 and losing sliders every time I go out.
Yea if your new to the sport go for the cheaper but still good quality items as mentioned above and definately make sure you have enough left for the toys

This is what I use. All up around $100 (got the rod & reel 2nd hand)
Mate,
After this weekends comp, I'd be looking at a Breamreaper.
Fantastic rod.

Yeah the BreamReaper was a great looking and feeling rod, can`t wait to get my hands on one for keeps. :D . Hooked up with an Inspira, mmmmmmm..;)
I also just threw together a second combo for Walpole, Stella rod ($110 - although I got mine much cheaper), Avenger reel ($75), 4pd flame ($25), really nice for casting softs and hards. And good quality as well.
Cheers

I have been looking at the Tica Rods and Reels anyone used em or heard anything about them

Many people seem to be very impressed with the Tica Libra and Camry model reels. I don't beleive I've ever seen anyone comment unfavourably on them. I didn't know they made rods.
bream boy, it all comes down to $
I reckon work out what you have to spend and then go get the best setup you can for that money.......
There is alot of good gear out there now.

Can't beat the old custom rod. But unless you make it yourself the $$$ go up.

I must agree with the posters, the Avenger reel by Okuma for 75-89 bucks is great value, they are excellent

I'm working on some Penn combos' at present.
We have just received three, one ball bearing reels which would be fine for starting out. Fitted to a Penn Pinpoint Rod and loaded with Fireline of your choice they will be $199 freighted to your door.
I think the retail is somewhere around $268 plus freight.
Anyone who is interested let me know.

Hi
graphite well its nice and the best thing for casting so i would be looking at a good rod over reel and. The reason why i believe a better stick is agood investment is a bream will never spool you nor many estuary critterds for that matter. There are loads of new rods around and good prices have a look at the penn rods very nice outfits. Just test the rod and see how quickly it stops woobling. This will mean the rod will cast futher if done properlly.
As a reel i would have a look around there is loads of great reels. The Tica range is great i personally picked up a regal x 1500 for a bargin (second hand).
For line definitely Fireline 4 or 6lb and Leader 8-12lb the difference from regular mono is unbelievable you will never go back., fireline is cheap.
Cheers

Gday
I'd have a real hard look at the shakespere range of Graphite rods, in particular, the Pflueger!
Match this with a Tica reel loaded with fireline, and your ready!!!
Dave
Hi BB,
What Stuie says isn't a bad idea. there are plenty of cheaper reels that will more than do the job. One of the reels I have is the Okuma Fina FA30. It only set me back $50 and works a treat.
I've caught fish over 1.5kg and many around the kilo mark and it hasn't been a problem. This gives you a bit of extra cash for the rod.
I agree with the general consensus that there are a lot of excellent 'cheaper' reels out there. I am currently looking for a new light spinning reel to go with my recently repaired Redington and I would much prefer to use a brand that does not get much representation out here.
Brands like Pinnacle, Pflueger and Fin-Nor all make excellent quality reels that dont seem to be priced to heavily but unfortunately they are near impossible to get in Aus. I have been ummmin and arrring about a little Pflueger Ultra Light, it is only 4.8oz and I can get it out here from the US for about $60-$70aud. But I would much rather buy from an Aus tacklo.
As for reels here in Oz, the Okuma's have been mentioned already but Daiwa have recently released the Samurai which is a neat little reel that us under $100 and the Caprice which is about $100.
Cheers

yeah i would go for the samurie has 7 ball bearings but it has a compisite body which i dont think that it would matter that much and the caprice is a nice liitle reel aswell.

At the end of the day the best outfit is the one in your hand with a good fish on the end of the line :-)
I own the samuria and i'd have to give it the thumbs up for sure.
It is super smooth, has a nice drag and a really good line capacity on the spool. It has all the goodies that you would expect from Daiwa and is nicely prised at around $80.
The Pflueger reels which are mentioned are really nice aswell. If there reels are as good as there rods, then they will be awesome!!!:D

As some others have said, it comes down to the dollars you have to spend.
I use a 6ft ugly stick lite which has cork grips and stainless steel guides, it cost around $130 bucks and I love it. It is very lite and seems to have a lot of strength - 3-7kg rating
with a Penn 4500ss, the reel is a little to heavy with a price tag to match ~ $220. It is an expensive combo (in my books) though a did purchase a few cheaper ones in the past and found they werent exactly what i was looking for.
At the end of the day, spend a little more and you will enjoy just using them, even if you dont catch any fish.

Just got me a Penn Graph 1.79m 6001 SPLM and it feels sweet!!;) ($70 new) plus I agree with Mitch and others...the OKUMA AV - 15 for around ($75 - $85) is a bloody good balanced outfit! ;)
Definitly go for a lighter stik (graph) if your planning to throw a bundle of lures...trust me it makes a big difference!!
