Aluminium Spool compared to the Black Spare Spool

Hi,

Does anyone notice any difference between the main Aluminium Spool compared to the Black Spare Spool that Shimano and a few of the other reel manufacters give you ?

I haven't noticed any less casting distance at all and the only difference I can see is in looks :)

my diawa regal x came with a spare graphite spool and they reckon that the alluminium spools cast better as the line slides of the alluminium spool ,some reels have a titanium spool lip which doesnt dent which is better for casting but i find no difference in casting as well i mainly always use the alloy spool because of looks.

Abit off topic but does anyone else notice that with the Okuma Epix reels the spare spool has less line capacity that the primary? Had a little accident last night and lost abit of line. Went to replace the backing with a longer line and the spare spool definately held less line.

Or is the spare spool supposed to hold less line?

First of all,

Graphite isn't as hard as aluminium
so is prone to being scratched easily
and leads to a possiblity of fraying the line

I've used Graphite spools before
After a while, with the use of braid
the lip of the spool starts to 'fray' a bit from the friction of the braid on the lip during casting!?

That's my thought and experience
(Weird how the spare spool is never the same as the original. Always crappier)

I have a spare graphite spool that I have spooled with 1.5kg mono. I read somewhere that Starlo uses this combo when the bream are really finicky. I also sanded the spool lip to get rid of the mould line using very fine wet and dry sand paper.

Filling the spare spool with low stretch mono of say 2kg would provide a good alternative when fishing areas where the fish are very easily spooked. Alternatively filling it with a higher breaking strain line class so that the reel can be swapped to a heavier rod would also add usefulness and let you get better value from your expensive reel.

I find gelspun line like fireline wears the casting lip of the graphite spools after a while. I had this happen when I was using the spare spool supplied with an Okuma Avenger only took a few weeks to happen & it wasn't getting used that much either.
