Lead sinkers & alloy boats

Anyone else heard that Lead sinkers & alloy boats, dont mix long term?

That they set up a galvonic (sic) reation.

correct LCF even earlier if there is salt water running around in the botttom of your boat and you dont flush it out with copious amounts of fresh water.

pays to lift your false floor up say every year to check if no sinkers or hooks hane falling under it.

Your right there Jim.
However you should be looking for lost swivels more often than lead sinkers. Lead is a fairly stable element that takes considerabe time to break down either through corrosion of galvanic reactions, so the damage that will occur to the hull will be slow. However with brass, nickel and chrome the process is much faster indeed.

Hi Guys,

Any two metals in contact in salt water is essentailly a battery, think about the corrosion plates on your outboards. However I would suggest the main cause of most corrosion in tinnys is dodgy wiring on lights, radios etc. Any electrical equipment should be really well installed and check there is no earthing to the boat.

It is amazing how many running lights are rigged up with a few twisted joints and a bit of old insulation tape. I have seen this even on big expensive boats.

A mate of mine had to have a hole repaired that was caused by a ten cent peice that lodged under one of the support braces in the bottom of his tinny :eek:

I've seen it happen on older alloy boats - but forgive me if I'm wrong, it doesn't happen overnight.

If it gets to the point where it eats a hole in the bottom of your boat you need to give yourself a good smacking - regular maintenence should notice anything like that;)

Guys i wouldn't worry bout it much, because if you maintain your tinny properly, you wont have any problems!
But, if there is someone you dont like, and you know the boat doesn't get looked after, find a 2cent piece and put that in there! hehehe
