gday guys
with the epix isnt it better to have a lower gear ratio or doesnt it really matter because isnt it 6:3:1 cause i guys at a tackle shop said it would be too fast for bream.but then o the okuma reels site it said that it was 5:0:1 that was the EF20 is this right
thanks michael

I dont think any reel can be "too fast" as wouldn't you just wind slower ?

I can understand how a reel could be to slow eg. high speed spinning off the rocks. You would quickly suffer fatigue if the gear ration was to slow.

The gear ratio for the EFS 20 is definately 6.3:1

the lower ratio I think is for the EB baitrunner models as they have a slower gear ratio.

As LCF said I dont think any reel being too fast can be a problem as you can always compensate. ALthough I do admit I have had to get used to this reel as I find my retrieves were coming in a little faster as my old reel was very old and was very SLOW.

Hope this helps

Mike
I think the info you got was from the American site. For the Australian stuff check out www.okuma.com.au (http://www.okuma.com.au) I hope that link works. I think you will find different info on this site.

I use an Epix 20 & don't find the high ratio a problem at all. I just retreive slowly thats all. Dunno why anyone would say they are no good because of it.

I try to use my rod to retrieve and use the reel to wind in the slack most of the time, so I don't think it makes much difference.

Yep, I agree with Ozy. I use the rod to twitch and impart action into the lure, and the reel to retreive slack.

Ocassionally you can use the reel to do a slow steady retreive, but you just need to train yourself to wind the handle slowly. I have 2 epix's and they are both fine for that.

Okuma Australia gave me an Okuma Epix 60 6.3/1 ratio, ( see their Photo Gallery) I used it the other day with some soft plastics, definitely not ideal size!!!!!!!! But I let the rod do the work, the reel only collects the line! With the hard bodies It's not hard to slow down!!! They are BRILLIANT reels!!!!!!!!!
